My new obsession. Anyone else into it?

With the records that are now available I was able to trace my ancestry in some cases back to the mid 1700s. Going back 10 generations, I can name 95 ancestors. In one case, I'm connected to a Rabbinic family (Tosfos Yomtov), and in that line I can trace my ancestry back over 1000 years to the Kalonymus family of Lucca, Italy.

My main resources are Geni.com, JRI-Poland, and JewishGen.

I'd be happy to help out anyone getting started, especially if their ancestry is Polish.

It's much more than curiosity.

You can also get info from the local governments. Birth certificates, death certificates, marriage certificates, etc. Just bear in mind that are not necessarily accurate as many people, if they reported them at all, may have reported them late, etc.

What's expensive? Searching records on JRI or JewishGen doesn't cost a dime and Geni is free to use for basic tree building. I opted for a paid subscription for use of the search feature but even that is not expensive. Got on sale for 99/yr
