It’s not the sellers policy it’s Amazon’s but yes if someone complains about an FBA order Amazon will still hold the seller accountable.
Is there another option you'd recommend to get free return shipping? It's a shame for the seller to lose out for something that's amazon's fault (advertising free returns and then trying to charge).

If you chat to get a free return label does that affect the seller?

The best option would be to contact the seller and let them know the issue. Every seller knows they’re screwed if a buyer decides to mark it as “item not as described”, but we have no protections. I’d rather handle the return myself without the hit to my metrics for selling supposedly bad product.

What does "handle the return myself" entail? Skipping amazon and having the buyer ship it straight to you? Because I'd be nervous to do that without knowing who the seller is...

Any item that says free returns, when returning I select inaccurate website description, which gives you all the options for free.
I don't think that this is unethical, for them writing "free returns" and then charging, is in my opinion an inaccurate description.
I don't think it's ethical to hurt the seller when it's not their fault.

You can select "did not approve purchase", IME it gives me a UPS label.

Since when does free returns mean that any option available for specific issues should be available for free for a standard return? All they have to do is give you a way to return it for free for it to be accurate
How would you feel if free prime shipping means picking it up from kohls?
It's still free, ain't it?

Correct, but your average amazon shopper won't know what hurts the seller and what doesn't.

Difference between free prime shipping/delivery and free returns. Fwiw, they always charged for ups pickup for me

Too many of those might hurt YOU with amazon.
How often is your account making unauthorized purchases?

I usually gave it to the UPS guy when he delivered, if I caught him. Or gave it to a guy in a truck. Or even (gasp) dropped it in a UPS box.

But now they want $5.99 to print a label so you can do that

same but now we're talking about printing a label

I was referring to handling the return from a seller perspective. Most of our items we refund or replace with no return required, but we can only offer that if a customer reaches out to us. From a buyers perspective, if you're reaching out through the Amazon platform and the seller messages that they will refund you, then you will have protection in case you need to file an A-Z claim.

Free return shipping does not mean free UPS pickups, it means a free shipping label.

I hear. Is that better for the seller than me chatting with amazon and getting a return label?

It's better in the sense that it gives the sellers the option to handle it themselves. Still many times the seller may tell you to speak with Amazon to handle a return.

As mentioned above, depends where you live. Where I am, a ups store is a 3-5 minute drive. I don't even know where a ups dropbox would be around here, but I doubt there are any closer than that.

The nearest UPS store to me regularly has 30m wait outside due to their onerous COVID precautions.

Pros and cons....I've never waited for more than 2 minutes (indoors), and nearly always no wait at all

How do you contact a seller re: an order? I tried clicking on the seller's name on the item page but it just takes me to the generic amazon help page where I can make a return or track a shipment etc
