Pricing tactic for business travelers
« on: October 31, 2019, 03:51:24 PM »
Why is it legal for airlines to increase the price for flights that are round-trip in the same week.

The same flights when staying a weekend are often up to half price.

Thoughts?

Price segmentation.
Businesses love to do that. Get the people who can pay more, to pay more while still letting the people who need to pay less, pay less. Not a perfect science but airlines segment passengers into business travelers and leisure travelers where the former can typically afford higher fares than the latter. They try to segment the two by using weekend stays and last minute bookings as differentiatiors. Not a perfect method but it works for the most part.

Question was shouldn't this be illegal in some way?

I mean they are selling the same items for different prices based on profiling people for what they can afford.

If apple charged more for products in stores in expensive zip codes would that be fine?

They are selling different items for different prices based on charging people for what (and when) they are purchasing.

Every now and then there’s always someone who comes around thinking they got ripped off and it’s illegal....

Sure. But their customers would get angry and protest.

If you’re thinking of that already, why are transatlantic one way flights sometimes more then a round trip??

The obvious solution (based on your other thread) is, when you need to fly more then once, book one ticket originating here and returning at the end of the 2nd trip, and another originating in TLV and returning for your 2nd trip.

Yep. Just like if Home Depot charged more for 2x4s in different zip codes....oh, they do that. Or Starbucks charged more for a latte in different zip codes...oh, they do that too. Or if TGI Fridays charged more for a burger in different zip codes....Or even better if you gave someone a more expensive price if they were below a certain age (that's what senior discounts are). Do we really need to go on and on about the fundamentally basic microeconomics concept of price discrimination, please tell me you were being sarcastic?

Or: Start with a 1 way NYC - TLV.  Then buy round trips TLV -NYC-TLV.  With a 1 month (?)stay in NY each time.
