Not sure it's a luxury item. It's just something that WORKS much better than others.
For example, I've found that spending $150-$220 on a pair of Ecco shoes is by far cheaper than spending $50 on other shoes, as the Eccos outlast the others by far (usually at least 3 times longer) while providing better performance (comfort), so it's simply a better value proposition.
Hahah, that's great we're polar opposites, I would never, ever spend that much on a pair of shoes!
This is my current pair of shoes, I paid $31.99 for them and I love them! They fit great, the look great, and I couldn't be happier. I already have my next pair lined up thanks to this
ddms post, they cost me a whopping $17.65!
I'd much, much rather spend $30 even if that means spending it more often because:
1) Even if doesn't last as long, that means I get a new pair more often
2) The thrill of the hunt! Looking for a deal on anything for me is super exciting (search my name in this board
)
3) Finally, $30 twice or even three times a year doesn't come close to $150-$200
