Best card for groceries
« on: July 29, 2009, 12:38:32 AM »
I don't drive much. Maybe fill the tank once a month. I do, however, need to eat. What's the best card for the highest reward for grocery purchases?

Why use cash when I can use a card that will give some sort of reward?

If your looking for cashback and want to get it as a statement credit every month (vs having to wait till you accumulate $250), I think the best card is the Amex Simply Cash card. It will only give you 1 percent on groceries though. If you also charge your cell phone bill to it, you'll get 5% cash back for that.

If your looking to get the most for groceries, there may be better options out there, but not necessarily cash back. For example the Amex Gold Rewards card http://www.dansdeals.com/archives/5073 .The Chase Freedom card may also give you a higher rate of cashback for groceries.

I have the Chase Freedom. It's 1% only. They just reduced it in June 09.

I wil check the others.

Just checked my chase freedom - still getting 3% at grocery stores, and still an $250 for redeeming $200
Could be because I have a checking account with them - dunno...

I was in a chase branch today to open a biz checking account (25,000 OnePass bonus miles), and they offered me a Chase freedom CC as well, and it comes with 3% cash back on groceries if it's one of your 3 highest spending category's. I told the CS rep that I heard they stopped giving 3%, he said that's only on the personal card the Biz still has it! The card also comes with $50 cash back already on it.

How about that! I'll give them a ring. Thanks for the lead!

(25,000 OnePass bonus miles)

I just opened one - they told me $200 AND 20,000 continental (or onepass) miles - on the papers they sent me it says $200 and 2,500 miles.

Didn't call yet, but im wondering if you might have any documentation about the miles, i heard about it the first time from them as i was opening it...

Thanks

And the details about the business card - they gave me that too:

you get $50 when you sign up
the 3% is in different categories than the personal - a few are the same, like gas and i think restaurants - the others they give you are travel (which im pretty sure includes rental cars too), office stores and home improvement stores - top 3, first $2000 you spend there per month...
and they give you $250 when you redeem $200, which makes it 3.75%

I told the CS rep that I heard they stopped giving 3%, he said that's only on the personal card the Biz still has it!

A friend of mine showed me a letter he got today from chase that they're upgrading his personal card b/c he has a checking account w/ them - they're giving him 3% in five categories, $250 for $200, etc., so i guess they're not really stopping it...

Also btw i get 6 categories, not 3, dont know why...

I have just gotten off the phone with the closest Chase branch to me, in New Haven, CT (there are none in Boston, RI, NH). They have CONFIRMED that if you have the Chase Freedom and open *ANY* Chase checking account then your rewards goes up to 3%.

I am about to get in the car and open a Chase checking account at a bank 2 hours away. I am insane.

I would not drive 2 hours to get the Chase Freedom deal...after all it's entirely possible they will downgrade your card by the time you get home!

By the way, here's a Chase Freedom app for Chase checking customers with $50 cash back
https://app.firstusa.com/ICAppServlet/?PID=RTFD4&SPID=C5H7&CAT=0&CELL=6J43

Note that you must make a checking account transaction every 4 months and that you can only earn 3% on charges of up to $600 ($18 cash back) per month.

Dan, I already have the Chase Freedom. I am opening a checking account and linking the two to I can get 3% cash back. Your application you linked is for opening a Freedom account, that I already have.

MacDan, for the CO promo, it's 25k miles, not 20k. Also you need to print out the coupon (personal or biz) on dansdeals to get the promo http://www.dansdeals.com/archives/5277.

I have the freedom card with a checking account and its not limited to $18 - i get about $50 a month from it. Also i never heard about the 4 month thing, but then again i do use that account.

But do note that the account might charge you fees.

In general, the variations if heard of with the freedom card are the amount of categories, the limit (i've heard of $12), and not getting the $50 bonus when you redeem $200.

I am about to get in the car and open a Chase checking account at a bank 2 hours away. I am insane.

Why not online?
