Topic Wiki

Please be aware of this (possibly Israeli) man who targets Jewish travelers mostly at airports. He approaches people , usually starting by asking if you speak Hebrew, than goes on claiming he needs money, usually for a train home to Boston, as he has lost his wallet/ card and claims he will pay you back. There have been many people who have unfortunately fell for this, giving him money  never to be seen again. This has happened at JFK , EWR, BWI, BOS and other airports/ train stations across the country. He has used the name Eli Avidan and even has shown people an ID with that name. Please share. Thanks!

i think it’s way too general and the list is endless. You gotta use your common sense and travel alert. For example when you travel to popular tourist areas put valuables in non pickpocketable places. It’s just bothering me that right his minute, this clown is preying on some tired frum traveler

About 19 years ago when I was 15,  or maybe when I was 16 (I'm 34) I flew to NY on some thanksgiving deal to you know, just getaway.

On a sunday, I was traveling on subway, Israeli guy comes over with this whole story how his family is at hotel, he needs to trade shekels for dollars blah blah blah, says he has to go to 770 next day to make bracha (hagomel) wtv he gave  me an address in israel, said he'd meet me at 770..

short story, I gave him ALL my cash, few hundred never saw him again, learned a thing or 2.

But ive had strangers help me,  maybe it was 10 shekel or 5 euro.

Funny story, a VERY close friend of mine who bh built crazy successful biz in israel texts me, can I wire $250 to one of his employees, using western union.. I'm like wtf who uses WU? I'm thinking his WhatsApp was hacked, so I asked him a few questions that only he'd know, then I'm like are you sure this guy isn't scamming you?

With that said, I'm surprised no provisions exist for travelers on the go who may lose a wallet.

Sounds very similar to the time that got scammed once at Penn Station in NY almost 20 years ago. He was in from Israel and missed a flight and needed some cash to pay for his hotel near JFK. Said he was in for medical treatment in Boston through ROFEH (a tzedaka organization in Boston). Needless to say the name/number he gave me in Israel wasn't real. Should have asked to see his Teudat Zehut...

You can usually tell whether it's a scam based on how skilled he does his job, when a normal person loses his wallet and needs to beg to a stranger for money, he acts totally different, in a way that it's totally visible. And if by chance he did lose his money and still he's comfortable begging, then he doesn't deserve it ???
I know a man who collects for a tzedakah organization for a living. I see him collecting on the streets, and he's quite comfortable with it. If he lost his wallet, why would he not "deserve" help?

No I wasn't, collecting money is one thing, apparently it's his job, which is fine. No one gets used to lose their wallets.

I don't mod that group but I'll ask.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.
