Topic Wiki

Please be aware of this (possibly Israeli) man who targets Jewish travelers mostly at airports. He approaches people , usually starting by asking if you speak Hebrew, than goes on claiming he needs money, usually for a train home to Boston, as he has lost his wallet/ card and claims he will pay you back. There have been many people who have unfortunately fell for this, giving him money  never to be seen again. This has happened at JFK , EWR, BWI, BOS and other airports/ train stations across the country. He has used the name Eli Avidan and even has shown people an ID with that name. Please share. Thanks!

Possible Scammer EWR
« on: November 07, 2019, 01:58:49 PM »
I was in EWR, had a Israeli gentleman come over to me explaining in Hebrew that he lost his wallet and needs a train to DC. He asked for $86.

Realizing he his most likley a scam. He sort of gave up on getting money. I then picked up his carry on and it was weight less. He opened it and had it packed with a pair of pants and a seltzer bottle. Not a typical traveler.

He ran away.

Always praying for delayed baggage.

It's like Tom Hanks, except he's stuck over a matter of $80.

Been there done that a few times in Kiev with people who "needed money to change ticket" coming home from Uman. Offered to go to counter and use cc.
Fair warning - Any PMs sent in response to forum posts are fair game for ridicule in public.

Being gomlei chassadim is in our DNA. Unfortunately that sometimes leads to getting taken by a scammer. If the guy is successful fooling one out of 10 people he would be doing very well for himself. The people on DDF are probably a little sharper than his average target.
I would think if he does this too often eventually he would run into problems with security.

he blends in well with the travelling crowd. The funny thing is , is that he doesnt change his MO and story one bit. It always includes the same details. $80, train boston etc..
