Yes, I've heard of it. "Someone's friend" probably has a clue why this happened.

Don’t mess with Chase. They have been closing accounts and they take no prisoners. They will close all CC, checking and savings in the same household. It is not random and I am sure you (sorry, your friend) knows why.

I'm not sure it's always that they also close bank accounts. IIRC that isn't always the case.

That has been happening more recently. There is a FWF thread with some data points. A lot more data points via PM. It involves the AARP card. I am sure you can guess what type of charges was put on it.

From FWF:

All our household Chase Credit Cards got closed due to the closure of the new AAPR card, likely due to three runs of close-to-credit-line payments pushed from outside billpay system within the first three weeks after receiving the card for legitimate expenses (rough repair, vet visits, etc). No churning. Credit line was 4K.

Well, lesson learned: don't push too hard even though the expenses are legitimate. They don't like you spending over your credit limit too much and pay off too quick, too often.

and this one:

Follow-up about my little white friend. Chase closed all cc accounts for me and spouse. Not complaining, it was fun while it lasted. Below is the email I received from them.
-------------------------
We received word from Chase that we must deactivate your Square account due to potential money laundering. As such, we will be unable to complete any refunds on your account.

Thanks,

Wow that's crazy! So Chase owns the SquareUp merchant processing?

No, the card issuer alerted the processor that's it.

No way to really know. Not a lot of data points on this one. Have seen some reopen after a year. This is most likely YMMV.

You've been able to get them to keep a card open?

Interesting, you spoke to them and they let you do that or you just did it and they didn't end up closing it?
