Bonvoy - larger rooms no longer available?

SPG usually had larger/upgraded rooms and suites that you could book for additional points. Bonvoy has this too for a little bit but seems that you can now only book a basic room with points. Any ideas on how to get larger rooms with points? I’m in the NY area. Thanks very much.

What has worked for me (gold elite) is to call the day of and ask if the larger room (two bedroom suite) is available. Then, book the regular room (one bedroom suite) for the regular points. Then, call back and ask for and upgrade. But, it is annoying when trying to plan a trip in advance, unless you are ready to take the smaller room.

1) Does a 35k certificate work for a specialty room in a cat. 3 hotel that doesn't offer pts. redemption online for that room?
2) Am I better off just using 17.5k actual pts. and requesting an upgrade?
