Will Elal finally become a connecting airline? Alternative to EK EY QR?

Does it rally make sense to fly TLV-MEL nonstop? Wouldn't it be better to add it to the HKG flight (or better yet add SIN as a stopover, if it would be possible to get there without the Malaysians objecting)?

I spoke to a friend from SIN who told me he doesn't take the nonstop from SIN to the US as it is too long to be boxed into an aircraft (even in J).
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

That's what the 'trials' will tell  ;D

But I agree with you.. I often fly TLV-LAX direct in J and I go nuts, so I can't picture adding an extra 3 hours.

So to do it in Y.. with kids..  :o

El Al announced on Tuesday that its commercial test of non-stop flights to and from Melbourne will take place in April and May, with a decision on keeping the route expected in a few months, subject to regulatory approvals.

Round trip ticket prices will start at $1,199. Miki Strassburger, El Al Vice President for Commerce and Aviation Relations at El Al said, "The duration of the direct flight to Melbourne is expected to be 16:15 hours, while the return flight, from Melbourne to Ben Gurion Airport, is expected to be 17:45 hours and will be the longest flight without intermediate landing to be made in the history of the Israeli aviation industry."

Very impressed with dates they chose. Perfect for Aussies going to or from Israel for Pesach

I spoke to my uncle who travels this route 1-2x a year. He would normally stop in HKG, but it's more difficult to do so right now. Maybe El AL is smart to sieze the opening here.

Ideally I would think they would need to make this route include a stop, the big question would be where  (Maldives, Bangalore, Sri Lanka, Ko Samui, Manila, and Singapore come to mind)? Any SE Asia stop could present a difficulty due to Indonesian and Malaysian airspace.

If you've got a 787 may as well use it.

Initial schedule is leave TLV Thursday, arrive in MEL Fri, and depart Sat night. Makes a lot of sense. Aircraft would be parked somewhere over shabbos anyway and this way the crew can rest in MEL and fly back so thdy don't need to send a second crew.

Why?

Because a nonstop TLV-MEL is just too long.

Plenty of airlines offer one stop service.

Elal flight 87 presently en route from TLV to Perth, Australia for (probably) first ever direct flight between the two countries.

Flights a couple of days ago between TLV and Lima, Peru were longer - possibly Elal's longest yet.
