Amex Platinum ( airline credit)
« on: November 03, 2011, 02:07:57 PM »
I've had an Amex Platinum for a little over a year now. I would like to attempt to "churn" this card. My questions is should I wait until after 1-1-2012 so I can get my 200 airline credit and then cancel afterward?                     (to avoid the annual fee)

Can you get the annual fee refunded after using the $200  airline credit? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

I have similar question. I had a Platinum card earlier this year, used $200 airline credit and cancelled the card after 60 days. If I apply for the same card now and if approved, will I have $200 airline credit for this year again?

thank you!

Did you get the full amount reimbursed after using the $200?

Just put other charges on as well and don't cancel as soon as the $200 credit posts. The CSR won't even notice.

I think the accepted approach (both in terms of churning & maitaining good credit score) would be to keep the card open while applying and if they don't let you get a new one offering to combine the balance on the new card so you get the sign-up benefits. I've also read that you can downgrade you Amex Platinum to Gold to avoid the big annual fee and then you can try to sign up for a new Platinum card.

I'm fairly new at this so you may want to wait for the experts to confirm but I think those are the accepted strategies.

+1

Might want to wait 30 days from the downgrade before you churn.

All sounds good except that because there is no listed Credit line on a charge card i'm pretty sure cancelling it does not hurt your credit because your overall credit line does not go down.

So, back to my question - do you think it is possible to churn $200 airline credit twice during one calendar year? I'm still debating what is the best - to apply for Gold Biz card (75K offer) or apply again for Platinum card for 50K.

Thanks!

Thanks! I think I would go with Platinum card again for 50K - I need to spend $1K only + get $200 credit this year ( + next year). $10K spending in 5 months is toooo much for me.
