All sounds good except that because there is no listed Credit line on a charge card i'm pretty sure cancelling it does not hurt your credit because your overall credit line does not go down.

This is simply untrue.

This is simply untrue.

I seem to remember seeing CLs on charge cards that were reporting high-balance for the month (not the life of the card). This may have changed.

Please explain how it has a negative affect on your credit.

The way they report the CL may effect your credit score (by affecting your utilization). Closing the account might also affect your 'average age of accounts', which is a factor in your score.

But there is no Credit Limit Reported with any Agency it had a "-" where there is usually an amount. If I understand correctly the only negative affect would be from the reported high balance and length of history correct?

Also, Quick question - Since a large amount of your credit is determined by the average length of your cc.  I have a few old cc ( no annual fee or bonuses ) that i've had for 10+ years . I've really only been working the bonus game for a year or so. If i understand correctly, in regard to history ( i realize cancelling will effect overall limit and utilization) if I cancelled all of the cards i've acquired in the last year and only leave open the ones with 10+ years. will those be the only taken for the average or closed accounts as well?

Why, thanks.

There may not have been a credit limit reported on your charge card, but IME (like NPSL) cards, the high balance is reported as the CL. Thus, closing the card would have a negative effect on your credit score as your utilization will--all things being equal--go up.
