Misc Tech Questions
« on: December 13, 2019, 11:28:07 AM »
What does this new "picture-in-picture" feature mean? What does it do? I see it now on most videos as a small blue icon and when hovered over it expands to this:

I clicked on it and all it did was send the video to the lower corner
If it's not free shipping it's not worth it.

picture in picture is an old android feature, you can have 1 app in a small square over a second app in the background. I use it most with google maps, I can use my phone as normal with google maps in the bottom right corner

You use Firefox... they recently added it (see https://www.pcmag.com/news/372317/firefox-71-adds-picture-in-picture-for-youtube-and-netflix) Chrome had this option for a while (although no box showing it, only when right-clicking twice on the video it is an option in the menu.)

It's very useful when you want to watch something but don't want the webpage open the whole time. This Picture in Picture window you can pull out of the browser windows and it remains on top of everything.

Just got the option to update my Galaxy S10e to Android 10. I don't usually update software unless there's some major security bug, but I wanna try out Android 10. :)
Go for it or na?

For sure why not? As long as it's the final version (not beta)

I did. The only thing I noticed different so far is they changed the volume bar to be much thinner and when you plug in to charge it displays how much time until full in small white letters.
My Tapatalk notifications don't always work.

It also now has an additional bar at the bottom of the keyboard which is annoying and won't turn off

I use Nova launcher prime so could be it's different then your phone. My keyboard looks like this and it didn't change from before. Where are your navigation buttons?

Turned them off a long time ago. Instead it is just a swipe up from off the screen. Gets rid of the navigation bar entirely. Until now, that is.
Not sure if this is only a Samsung thing though.

I ordered 2 packs of 50 USB's (4GB)  (Knockoffs. Not brand name.) Oddly, each one came in a separate package, although I ordered them at the exact same time. Anyhow, one box was all neat, with the contents looking professionally packed. However, with the second one, the contents were just dumped in the box, seemingly opened, and then returned by different customer.

Contacted Amazon, they replaced it by ordering me a new one, and said I don't need to return the old ones...

Is it safe to use those USBs? Anything to worry about? Should I just chuck all of them?

A lot of those USBs are fake. The way it's done is by manipulating the firmware to show as if it can store 4GB while it can actually not really hold nearly as much.

You may be able to check/detect something like that using a software like https://www.grc.com/validrive.htm or https://www.heise.de/download/product/h2testw-50539

But there's no reason not to plug it in to my computer. No viruses or the like.

I would not say "there is no reason", it's actually totally possible, but I haven't heard yet of such large scale virus spreading.

Maybe install first an antivirus targeted for USB things, like https://www.smadav.net/?lang=en, and see if it pops up with something.

Random q. Do you work in computers for a living? Do you have a store or office where people can have repairs done?

Fake drives often have all sorts of shenanigans played with the file system. Statistically, you will get more duds, but you also may not be able to tell until your recipient tries to copy it off and gets an error message. It's like playing roulette with the data.
Cheap drives from name-brands may also be DOA (when you buy bulk), but if they do work, they will work until someone eats them by mistake (or any other mishap).
@HudZ Whatever your friend ends up buying, run this program to ensure the drives will serve their purpose:

I object. Your depth and breadth of knowledge goes way beyond helping your sister in-law get her pics off her sd card.

I DO have a computer shop and you've even helped me in the past  :D

So you may have your reasons for staying private but at least admit you own the IT store here on DDF.

If it's not free shipping it's not worth it.

I'm flattered.

Not having a shop doesn't tell anything about what you do or don't know... it just means that I don't make any money from it...

I like to say that it's my 5 to 9 job  ;D
