Flash drives are not reliable, hard drives are not reliable, CDs/DVDs are not reliable, and SSDs are not reliable. Scientists have been looking for a reliable storage medium for ages, but in the meantime, they haven't found on that is commercially viable. Amazon is also not reliable, but unlike most of the known universe, they keep multiple copies - so in theory, when one dies, they replace it. And that, my friend, is the mehalech to use.

Make sure you keep them in more than one place.

Regarding flash drives and SSDs in particular, the data is stored using electricity, and as such, one should plug them into power every once in a while to renew their electricity - and determine if one of your copies has died, at which point, you create another copy. Hence,

Also, plug in the flash drive every once in a while.

Obviously. The question is how much you trust that someone else with your data and with keeping it safe and with allowing you access to it.

Any real company is going to have many data redundancies that your friend probably would not have, or backup for you for free...

There are other pitfalls. It's not no-strings.
Still, to each his own.

I realized my account is shared across my entire family, so not so quick to dump 10,000 photos of various questionable quality to be visible to everyone  :-\
