You will be with 20 different yidden in a hotel, and everyone will tell you something else.

I ask for starters for a room that is on a lower floor.

The I use the tag of the check-in, which is mighty strong (see pic below), to cover the holes on the doorpost so that it doesnt lock when closing the door.

You might want to push some tissues in the holes before sticking it on.

I hang the Don't Disturb sign, but I'd put all valuables in a safe.

that reminds me of a funny story i feel like sharing... I went with friends to detroit and we ended up having to stay in the ritz carlton for shabbos. we were on the 6th floor- and on shabbos when we wanted to go out for a breath of fresh air we realized there was no staircase from the 6th floor to the lobby... it skipped the 1st floor... and there was noone to ask how to get down cus we only noticed it on shabbos and noone was around. funny story. we felt trapped.. im sure there was a way down besides for the elevator- but go figure!!

What about automatic doors?

I wait it to open up for someone else and slip along.

To get the guys rocking here, inform about using the elevator with gentile from hotel  + opening magnetic door, as well as lighting candles...

Personally I avoid hotels with only electronic doors like the Danieli Venice.

I always scope out the place to see the stairs situation.  Hotels may not have lobby access from stairs (PH Paris, although there is an open exit to the street) or access can be locked to the floors (LM Chiang Mai) or to the exits (PH MEL, PH SYD).  Some staircases (Westin and Sheraton Waikiki have lights that are triggered as you walk down them.  Sometimes opening the balcony will turn off A/C.  Mini-Fridges can have lights when you open them.

All of this stuff can be rectified by yourself or hotel staff by overriding procedures or finding you a room on the lobby floor as long as you leave sufficient time to find all of the problems.

Haven't tried it at a hotel but on a cruise I tied a gartel to the inside door handle and left a little sticking out the bottom of the door. I just had to pull the gartel and the door opened. :)

I may be missing something (if so I'll be corrected), but the problem with PHP is that there is no stair access directly into the lobby. You would have to take the stairs to an EXIT and then return through the front door (if that's even possible on Shabbas).

Shoelaces work as well.

when i went to the westin in venice- i blocked the doorway as above mentioned... and i actually snatched candles from around the hotel (yikes) to light and i lit IN MY ROOM.. nothing happnd... funny thing is that when we landed our stroller was missing and they returned it friday nite when we werent in the hotel... im not sure what they did but we found it in our room- the candles were lit, and the door was DEF not shut (due to the paper blocking the lock) but noone said anythin and everytin was still intact... but it was a bit nerve wrecking as an after thought!!

+1, but the front door is electric and has no stair access, so you go to the back entrance and ask the guard to let you into the staircase that goes up to the rooms.

Are there hotels that have both cards and keys for the rooms?

i use the do not disturb sing in between the door and door jamb it skinny enough to stick through, hard enough that the door wont lock.
Get another one for the door so noone should enter...

I stayed at the Beverly Hills Crown Plaza for shabbos and they had a physical lock on each door aside from the digital one. Asking the front desk for a 'Shabbos Key' got me a physical key!!
