DAF: The Donors Fund vs The OJC Fund
« on: December 24, 2019, 04:13:17 PM »
So I want to open one of these, spoke to both, and the fees math pencils very similarly.

I guess it will boil down to customer service, and ease of redemption for those receiving the certificates.

So who do you recommend?

There seems to be a modest difference in administrative fees for the following donor advised funds (DAF).
(for balances under 500K) (aside from any investment fees).
There are other differences in minimum "grants" to charity etc..

Jewish communal fund:
--$36 minimum per grant
--annual fee of 0.75% (75 basis points) or $150*, whichever is greater
--need minimum balance of $500 to make grants to charities. Balances below $180 get distributed to "JCF Special Gifts Fund", and account is closed
--there IS Minimum grant activity (potentially influenced by grant activity of other account holders?!)

FidelityCharitable:
--$50 minimum per grant
--annual fee of 0.60% or $100, whichever is greater
--no minimum balance required to make grants
--no minimum level of grant activity

thedonorsfund:
--$100 minimum per grant
--annual 0.5% (50 basis points) or $100, whichever is greater.
--There does not appear to be a minimum balance required to make grants
--There does not appear to be minimum level of grant activity

P.s.
--The donor fund also has a "Certificate Advisory Account" where you buy certificates even for smaller dollar amounts and give them to the charity.
--The JCF indicates it may be compatible with some employer match programs
--The OJC seems to be different than the other conventional DAF provider.

The Donor's Fund certificate program also has an option for blank certificates where you can fill in any amount.

Donor's Fund is actually launching a new website at the end of January where there won't be any minimums at all. And it's going to be free for the donor.

That's interesting.

How big of a hassle is it for the recipient to cash those in? (mailing costs of the orginal contributor, administrative and mailing costs of the recipient, and then DF mailing back a check to the recipient, all for e.g. $18)

What happens if they never bother to cash those in? Or if they don't have a 501c3?
