Topic Wiki

Q: Hi, I searched all over the internet for an active link of the Chase American Airlines credit card and couldn't find one. How did you guys manage to get this card?
A: Ha ha... There's (currently) no co-branded Chase AA credit card, this thread is discussing 'Chase Adverse Action'. As a general rule, AA refers to 'American Airlines', while A/A refers to 'Adverse Action'.

Q: What does Chase A/A look like? Can I do something to prevent that from happening? And once I'm hit, is there anything I can do to get back in the game?
A: To better address all the questions and concerns, we'll divide it in three sections:

1) What Are The Triggers?
2) What Happens?
3) How To Get Back

What Are The Triggers?

Basically, there are two possibilities that might trigger a Chase A/A:
Credit Related Risk
-Opening too many new cards in a short period of time, (even from other banks, and even being added as an additional user is considered as opening a new account, even a spike in your total CL even from being  additional user has been a trigger for many people - Dec 2013);
-A sudden excessive use of your cards;
-Maxing out your available credit limit.
-Buying large amounts of Chase GC (most people didn't have problems but lately some people are getting shut down for this).
Of course, there is no general rule with these things, it mostly varies by your particular credit file and worthiness.

Perk Abuse
-Transferring Ultimate Rewards points to someone else's account other than your spouse or domestic partner;
both, the sender and the recipient, are at risk of A/A.
-Abuse of the 5% cashback bonus on the AARP card.

What Happens?

Q: What does a Chase A/A look like? How do I know whether I was shut down or not?
A: If you can't access your online account on chase.com, this is not A/A.
When you encounter such a thing it could be because 1) the website is undergoing maintenance - wait till the site is back up; 2) a sever error - try using
    different browser
; 3) you didn't log in to your account for a while - call the number on the back of your card; 4) a security concern (resulted by a large QuickPay
transfer or similar - call the number on the back of your card.
When you get hit by A/A, you'll see a message above your account "Your account is closed and no longer available for use. If you have a balance remaining on the account, please continue to
make monthly payments by the due date."; your card will no longer work; and within 7 days you'll receive a letter in the mail notifying you of the closure and the reason to it.
Q: Do they close down all my cards or just one?
A: If your shutdown was a result of 'credit related risk', they usually close all your credit card accounts, while with 'perk abusers' they used to shut down all of your cards (April '12), but lately, it is limited to the accounts involved in the abuse.
Q: Do they shut down other accounts such as checking, savings or investment accounts?
A: Lately people are reporting getting their checking account closed when getting A/A'd.
Q: Once my card is closed, can I still access my points?
A: Again there's a difference whats the reason your account was closed. Ironically, if its because of 'credit risk', your points will be forfeited, (and that used to be the case with 'perk abusers' during the April '12 A/A wave), but if its because of 'perk abuse', you'll get a certain amount of time (from 2 to 90 days - as specified on your letter) to transfer or redeem your points.

How To Get Back

Q: Once one was shut down, is there any point of calling  customer service or any other department and try to convince them to reopen the closed accounts?
A: If your account was closed due to 'perk abuse' there is -almost- no way to convince them to reopen it (unless there was an error, and you really didn't commit any violations of the
     terms and conditions).
But if your account was closed for credit related reasons, you might have luck by calling the executive dept. 1888-622-7547 and trying to explain them why it might've looked like your at risk of default, but in fact, there is nothing to worry about. But of course YMMV with this.
Q: Can I apply for a new credit card after my accounts were closed?
A: Yes. There are a multiple reports of people being approved for a new Chase card after waiting a few months and applying again. But some were not that lucky, and some had their new accounts closed a few days after approval.

My point is that they'd 1) wait AND 2) use, say, the CSP (which can be xferred to UA), as opposed to a AmEx PRG (which can't).

Chase nets $7k in spend they otherwise wouldnt have.

If they were spending on this card until now, and will continue spending going forward (both due to the value of UR points) why would they switch to SPG? Remember, we're talking about transferability of UR points.

From what I understand, transfers were only allowed to spouses/family or something like that. Just because the system didn't check for bad transfers doesn't mean it was allowed.

So not only does the t&c you quoted mention nothing about closing accounts for violating transfer rules but it doesn't even refer to ur to ur transfer!

My whole original point was they never said I couldn't transfer ur to my friends ur account (couldn't meaning they would close my cc account if I did). You then responded something about being warned (below)...

Perhaps this will help as a starting point: https://www.chase.com/ccp/index.jsp?pg_name=ccpmapp/shared/assets/page/UltimateRewards_FAQ&jp_ltg=footer

Maybe this will help:

If "A" got the IB for the 50K bonus, after $10k spend, let's assume he has 63K.

He now has the choice to spend on [non-IB card], or keep spending on his IB card until he reaches an additional 7k points.

If Chase prohibits the the transfer of UR-->UR or UR-->FF, and he wants to fly LH F, he has to spend the 7k on the IB or be forced to buy from Chase or UA .

Except they did (and do).

And a violation of their T&Cs allow them to choose not to continue doing business with you (read: cancel your account).

That, or he'll find the 7k elsewhere. I don't think the 7k will make it or break it (whether they'll continue to spend on this card) with regards to the vast majority of cardholders. Perhaps we should agree to disagree.

That, or he'll find the 7k elsewhere.

That the whole point: if he does "find the 7k elsewhere", Chase loses out on the spend.

Perhaps we should agree to disagree.

Perhaps -- this is merely conjecture on my part as to why Chase might want to ban the xfers. I may very well be wrong on this, and I may be right that UA may cost > 1.25 cpm, or be wrong on both  :)

Could it be that some of Chase's partner airlines are complaining to Chase that a lower percentage of business class are now being paid for with cash, and a higher percentage are being booked via Chase rewards? And that the miles market accounts for this?

Nope. Award seats are capacity controlled. If the airlines don't like it, all they have to do is release less seats into the award bucket.

I was A/A'd last may for having too much revolving credit and chaser closed down my 4 credit cards. bh i managed to reopen two of them and get my points after speaking to chase exec offices. My question is how long does the oilam think i should wait before applying for a new credit card? Im starting to get itchy already, its been 6 months....! but i dont want to rock the boat. Does anyone know if you can be a'ad twice? once i was already shut down and then reopened does that make it less likely to be shut down again?

Is that a fork I feel in my back?

"Your User ID and Password are inactive"

From FWF

I tried to log into my personal chase accounts, and got this message:

"Your User ID and Password are inactive. To reactivate your online access, please call Customer Service at 1-877-242-7372. If you live outside the U.S., please contact Customer Service at 1-713-262-3300."

I tried to log into my "business" account and got the same message. I feared the blacklist.....

But after calling the number on the back of my card, turns out they're doing system maintenance. CSR advised to try back in a couple hours.

No worries. They were concerned since I set up some bank accounts on my account for transfer purposes.
All back to normal.

My heart just skipped a beat when, upon trying to log onto my wife's Chase account I got an error message saying I can't log in for one of the following reasons:
-Site is being updated.
-Invalid user ID.
-Profile is locked.

Site was working with other profiles and the user ID was being typed in correctly so that only left the third option...

I called them up expecting the worst... after speaking with an online specialist he told me that the system locked this profile due to some out of the ordinary activity. He did ask me specifically if I recently redeemed any Ultimate Rewards points. (Haven't done any UR transfers for months and did a 3BM in Aug-Sep).
He then proceeded to unlock the account and everything is BH working and in good standing.

Phew...

That's disturbing that he asked you if you had done any UR transfers and implied it would be a reason to lock the account.

I wonder what he would of said if you had told him yes?

disagree, Both Chase and Amex concern themselves very highly with the security of their Account Holder's  points. The fact that they may lock an account after strange UR activity is just to protect you.
