Not sure where this belongs (feel free to suggest another thread), but it’s another European corporate microaggression on the heels of the LH fiasco, posted by Rabbi Tyson Herberger on Facebook:

Norway's largest bank, DNB, has decided to visually cue people to associate Jews with the financial woes currently facing society.

In an article on their website entitled "Fear of inflation, interest rate jumps and stock market falls"*  they have decided to use a photo they title as "Inflation" and then (presumably accurately) caption as: "A hassidic Jew in the Williamsburg area of Brooklyn shops for food for Pesach."**

But Jews, Chassidic Jews, Pesach, other religious holidays, Williamsburg, nor even food prices, are not mentioned even once in the article beyond the photo. There is ZERO need to have this particular image - nor any image of Jews - to illustrate this story.

In addition to the antisemitic tropes of Jews and finance, there is the issue of consistently using chassidic men as representatives of Jews/Judaisms and how that pushes certain constructs of Jewishness over others. 

But the biggest issue here is not only the ignorance towards  antisemitic accusations of a Jewish cabal controlling global finance and associating Jews with financial difficulties experienced by others; but even the implicit promotion of such views by the use of this photo to illustrate a story that has absolutely no written text connecting it to a chassidic Jews shopping for his Pesach groceries.

I call on DNB to both change the photo and issue an apology. As a rabbi and an academic in religious studies who has lead diversity trainings before, I am happy to arrange or lead a seminar or discussion for DNB [or others] on antisemitism, stereotyping Jews, and the problems of disproportionately using images of visibly orthodox Jews to represent Judaism (if a bank ever needs an image of someone to represent Judaism - which is likely a dubious need).

For the good of the order: the DNB story was posted 2 May, screenshotted by me on 10 May; and I fully understand that the author listed (Ingvild Borgen Gjerde) may or may not have had anything to do with the photo selection, and that the photographer and photo agency (NTB - Norsk Telegrambyrå) undoubtedly had no idea or intention that their image would be used in this way.

* = Translation is my own, in Norwegian the article is titled: "Inflasjonsfrykt, rentehopp og børsfall"

Israeli media does this with charedim a lot. During covid it was incredibly incendiary.

They changed the caption, but not the picture. Why would a Norwegian bank writing to a Norwegian audience about inflation use a picture of an Orthodox Jew shopping in Brooklyn? It sends the wrong message, regardless of what the caption reads.

I guess it’s possible when I initially saw the change it was a caching issue.

That’s good, then the pressure accomplished its purpose. Probably some poor intern inadvertently chose the image, with so few Jews in Norway, they might simply lack the cultural sensitivity to the messaging such an image sends.

The irony is that the journalist died in crossfire but wasn’t intentionally slain, and with terror victims it’s the opposite, they’re intentionally slain R”L.
