Not at all. You need to be human. People hate because they are ignorant. It's been discussed on other threads, but people who are antisemitic become less so once they meet with and have positive interactions with Jewish people.

You think a guy who grew up in an insular community can just talk to a Nazi, for example?

May seems basic to you after years of mivtzoim, shlichus etc. but to many this is a crazy thing to do.

A shliach receives no formal training. His/her experience comes from doing it. I think that anyone can do it and the more they do it the better at it they will become. For all this talk, I don't recall ever trying to enter a discussion with someone who verbally attacked me. I'm also not suggesting this would "work" every time. But you need not be a professional to show people you are a human and plant seeds of doubt that all the horror they've heard about Jews. Keep in mind that I'm not talking about confronting a person, but rather engaging in a friendly way. That's not necessarily easy to do, but it would be far more effective at curbing antisemitism from that individual than contacting the police or a congressman.

To be clear: I'm not suggesting it is easy. I'm not suggesting it should *always* be done. I'm saying that in the right scenario, responding in a friendly way rather than the instinctive fight or flight could have a powerful impact on the perpetrator.

I'm not disagreeing per se, but what the shliach did was confrontational and while you point out a shliach doesn't have formal training, I'm not sure what that has to do with it, he has experience.

With some quick math I probably spent 1,000+ hours on mivtzoim talking to strangers over my years in yeshiva and that's the same for most people that went through the chabad system.

All I'm saying is if a neighbor yells curse words and you never talked to a perfect stranger before, it might not work out well trying to talk to him like that shliach did, but at the same time by all means be human and show haters we are nice people.

Update: the (20 something) fellow’s mother (three generations live together) came over with some kosher brownie bars from NPGS to apologize (and presumably, to preempt me bringing charges) and we had a nice 15 minute conversation. I told her I would be stopping by to speak to her son as well, she said that would be great.

It was related to something else but it was completely unprovoked. This is the story:

Someone who came over for a (legal, safe, quiet, early) bonfire parked in front of a hydrant. The neighbor called the police (normal, right?) and informed a couple of people nearby. When my brother and I came over to find out what the commotion was she was yelling at them about people parking in front of pumps (I’ve lived here for two years, nobody has ever antagonized them or parked in front of a pump that I can remember as there is plenty of parking and there were no other parking/noise issues occurring).

As she turned towards us to give us an earful her son ran out of the house yelling at us about us Kikes taking over the neighborhood and how he would personally beat us down, followed by a large gob of saliva. He had the presence of mind to say “Oh now you Jews are going to call the cops on me, right?” at which point we gently reminded him that the police were already en route thanks to a call his mother had just placed.

They have called the police on many neighbors only to have them come down and explain that they are doing nothing wrong (erecting a swing set, leaving leaves at the curb, etc.). We are on a *super* accommodating block where everyone is kind and careful about our interactions with neighbors.


Funny PS: When the cop arrived the fellow had moved (initially she attempted to block him from moving his car). She told the cop she had his plates on tape and was considering pressing charges. She seemed quite shocked when he informed her that she doesn’t actually have that option on a traffic violation.
