I won't accumulate miles in Aeroplan because they scare me...too much risk that they will introduce fuel surcharges on Star Alliance tickets (after all they charge it on Air Canada redemptions) and crappy expiration policies.

Awful. Kudos to Dan for predicting this, I just didn't think they would do it this quick. I mean they just devalued their award chart big-time, and a mere 4 months later they drop this bombshell. Shame on Aeroplan. This also sucks for MR points, now there is no good *A program to transfer into. (ANA's expiration policy is even worse than Aeroplan, and transfer is not instant, but ANA rates are sometimes better).

Correct, but I was pointing out some key differences between the programs, unfortunately YQ is not one of them anymore :(

Can someone with AC miles please post sample surcharges on different *A carriers?
Doesn't seem like I can see the taxes without sufficient miles.

My experience was always that mixing in one of the non-YQ-airlines in a booking, reduced the YQ all over.

(LH always had more expensive taxes)

That's an example of YQ sneaking into your wallet. In your case the fuel surcharge was probably about $105, which may not be terrible if you got a short-haul 15K award (instead of 25K). But for TATL you can get hit with upwards of $500, on what's supposed to be a free ticket.

Would the cost of converting aeroplan miles to other airlines through points.com be cheaper than the cost of fuel surcharges?

For the moment you can still get away with Air NZ, Singapore, CO, UA, Swiss, Turkish, Air China, Brussels Airlines, EgyptAir, Spanair.

Though probably only a matter of time.

Swiss is owed by Lufthansa, charges fuel surcharges as well. Dont think it makes sense, that they are still of the list, but not complaining

Is it still worth it to transfer worldpoints to aeroplan? If not what is the best thing to do with worldpoints now?

I think that's the only airline transfer option (please CMIIW), but you might want to hold onto them and transfer then when you want to book, this way you have flexibility with which account you're transferring to and you don't have to worry about Aeroplan's expiration policies (12-months with inactivity, and 7-years even with activity).
