As I expected, this is more Yiddishist than Yiddish - just based on the one screenshot of the text. The translations are pretty tortured and quite unreadable to a native Yiddish-speaker.

I did like some of the decisions mentioned in the article, which gives me hope that the final product will be a bit better than what that screenshot shows. Having Dumbledore speak Yeshivish, McGonagall being an uptight Litvack, and Hagrid an alta Poilisher is just brilliant. Hopefully it'll hold up in the actual book.

This though is absolutely unforgivable and a terribly missed opportunity:

I know you didn't ask for my thoughts, but I'll give them anyway. I'm torn between my disinterest in fictional works to my love of Yiddish and linguistics, on whether to read this or not.

How would you have spelled that? לאנגטאכעס or לאנגתחת or should it be לאנגאחור?

So I was see I was wrong. I was sure that after talking for 45 minutes he would basically only quote @something fishy on "none of the boys in his religious community read it, Mr. Hersko said."

As always, that utterly strange dichotomy. Some sentences are completely incomprehensible ("I can teach you how to bewitch the mind..."), while others are fantastically creative and actually make sense ("Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak!").
