BA and AA rewards
« on: November 11, 2011, 02:42:41 PM »
Hi,

I have some BA miles I'm considering redeeming before the dreaded Nov. 16   ;) . I also have some AA miles as well. I have 2 questions:

1- Is there any difference between BA and AA in regards to how much miles they charge, fuel surchages they charge to travel on 1 of their one world partners?

2- Based on what I can tell, if I want to go from DTW- HKG (on AA) I wouldn't be able to stop over in HNL on the way to HKG because of the east/west rule. Am I correct?

1) Yes, there is a difference. AA only charges fuel surcharges on BA. The award charts vary. Check each one to compare.

2) What do you mean by the east/west rule?
AA allows a stop at the north American gateway.

1- I would traveling on CX either way (on AA or BA miles). Would there still be a difference between AA and BA?

2- Sorry I wasn't so clear. I would be travelling using BA miles, on AA, hence the east/west rule.

BA has 4 different award charts (at least for the next couple of days).
If you're only travelling on CX, use your BA miles. It's slightly less miles. Even though it will be more taxes, BA miles are about to tank.

If you plan on flying on AA and CX, BA will become very expensive.

CX doesn't fly to HNL, so you're correct that stopping in HNL is not an option.
But that would apply to both AA and BA.

JAL (Japan Airlines) flies HNL-NRT so with AA miles you could fly to HNL on AA, HNL-NRT on JAL and NRT-HKG on JAL or CX.

Thanks for the info. One more question: if I fly with AA miles, does AA charge more if I mix carriers? For example I'm thinking of doing DTW- LAX, LAX-HNL which would be on AA metal, then JAL from HNL-NRT-HKG?

The mileage required will remain the same, no matter how many carriers you use as ling as its a valid award.
As far as taxes go, it may be a little more but not significant.
