If it can't withstand a ruach metsuya without the ties, then the ties are considered a maamid. You're better off putting some wood on top.

I'm gonna put some wood on top but was thinking of tying those down in case we get a very windy day.

I would guess that anything that can blow off a 2x4 is ruach she'ayno metzuya. Thus the ties on the wood wouldn't be a maamid.

I don't remember the exact problem, but you need to use a special type of rope to tie down schach.

can't imagine a problem but you can always use wooden dowels. I did that to ensure that I shouldn't have rust
