Needs to stick around until hachanos (including hadlakas neiros according to some) for shabbos are complete. Minhag (maharil) is to use for lechem mishnah by each meal to do more mitzvos with it.

Good question. Many kehillos that, for example, say the tefillah by duchening on Yom tov skip it on shabbos. On the other hand we don't say bakashos in shemonah esrei.
