Baal Tashich is certainly not a consideration in this circumstance.

בל תשחית דגופא עדיף

אין עצה ותבונה נגד ה׳

If Bal Tashchis would allow one to be mechallel shabbos, we would have no more shabbos... every important work call etc.
בל תשחית is never a factor when looking for a leniency in a questionable situation, במקום הפסד\הפסד מרובה is what is being mostly used, perhaps he had that in mind that the monetary loss was the issue, not just בל תשחית. (or צורך שבת)

שבת ד ע"א
Case is where someone put bread in the oven on shabbos and the gemara asks if it can be removed before he is oiver oraysa or d'rabanan
The Gemara is talking about cooking on shabbos. I reheated it before shabbos but forgot that it was there. It wasn’t cooking on shabbos.

So there’s no issur of bal tashchis or there is but tough luck, the other issur is worse ?

What is considered more חמור? Cooking on shabbos or wasting food?

Bal tashchis is throwing away food for no reason, not when there is a reason for it. The more important factor would be how late after the zman it was.

In middle of the meal. Realized something’s missing from the blech. Can you elaborate on “how long after the zman” ?

As a practical matter, there is no tzad at all that you should open the microwave to take it out so that it shouldn't go in the garbage.

Is the issue of bal tashchis something that rabbeim (& parents) like to overdo ?
Growing up that’s like the worst possible sin that one could commit. :)

There is a very clear obligation to lose ALL worldly possessions to avoid doing a lav.

Any lav
ETA: I don't think it is clear that wasting something is part of a lav de'orayso. and it is definitely only when there is no purpose at all.

I left food in the microwave as shabbos started. Which is worse ?
1) Leave it there & bal tashchis
2) open the door & the light goes on
3) unplug it & the digital numbers go off

Disclaimer: I am not a Rabbi. All halachic inquiries should be addressed to your LOR.

1. There is no Baal Tashchis concern because by definition BT only applies when ruining usable food for no constructive purpose. (Not violating shabbos would certainly rate as a constructive purpose.)

2. Even if there would be a BT concern, we would have to weigh that against the issur involved. Leaving food to spoil is at worst an issue of a derabanan and would certainly not outweigh chillul shabbos d'oraysa. And even if the chillul shabbos involved here would only be derabanan (possibly the scenario of unplugging it), BT would still not outweigh the chillul shabbos because the CS involves actively doing the issur while the BT involves only passively allowing the food to spoil.

3. As mentioned before, you are out of luck. There is no way for you to remove the food from the microwave.

4. There would be an eitza to have a aino yehudi remove the food as the turning on the light is a pesik reisha and amira l'akum in a case of pesik reisha is allowed.
