Usually the widespread practice will precede the heteirim...

I am looking to buy a extra freezer. I found a good one by a lowes outlet for a good price. however it is not on the star k list of approved appliances. is there anything else to be worried about in terms of shabbos/yt - besides for the light? like the compressor/motor turning on when opening? if its just the light then I can call the company and ask them if there is a way to disable it somehow, but if its more issues than just a light....

(for some reason I feel like I'm being extra machmir here, the fridge/freezer I have at home came with the house, and I never looked into it, just made the sure the bulb was out....)

thanks
For a bit of a DIY approach

Back to the water urn tevilah issue:
There is a warning on it not to immerse it in water...
1) Is "breaking it and fixing it" a viable option? Practically what do you do?
2) Selling it to a goy and borrowing it back? Does this work only temporarily or long term??
3) rely on the shita of Chelkas Yaakov?

Toivel it and wait until it fully dries. I don't know anyone who had one break because of it.
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

selling to goy is long term and probably best option

This. I have done it numerous times with no issue. Wait a week or more. Also, be sure not to use it the first time on shabbos just in case. I know of one case where it was not fully dried and the thermostat did not go off. Even then it worked fine a week later.

I found this very useful and clear in explaining the basics:
Interesting about GE/Star-K/Zman at the end there. It seems like it's saying that since GE severed ties with Star-K, there's no way to really know what's happening in a GE Sabbath Mode fridge. But if Zman worked with GE to make the Shabbos Keeper, presumably they know the inner workings. I'm curious to hear what they feel the 'basic' mode accomplishes if anything, and the halachic discussion around the issues Shabbos Keeper addresses above and beyond what the 'basic' mode accomplishes.

ETA - I see they have a breakdown here: https://www.zmantechnologies.com/store/shabbos-keeper.html. But from the quick read through I did it seems like most of the problems in basic GE shabbos mode they're correcting for are applicable to Star-K shabbos mode as well, and Star-K is okay with it because of their shita that 'invisible' changes in the circuit board are okay on shabbos.

I one time asked a Rov if a New Yorker can check in for someone taking a flight from La on motzia shabbos ( can’t do it before shabbos). He said it’s problematic.

I just got a response from a posek with an encyclopedic knowledge of modern-day teshuvos (wrote Dor Hamilaktim, but I doubt any non-Mirrer Y-m knows who he is - a musmach of Rav Berkovits and Rosh Chaburah). He said he did not know of a heter. Sorry, I tried.
if he doesn't know of a heter it 99.999% doesn't exist....

Looking at the multitude of threads discussing Cancun and multiple other problematic destinations and cruises it seems like the issue isn’t even on peoples radar. maybe the heter is מנהג עוקר הלכה?

Or maybe your assumption that you will bump into non-tznius persons more than wherever they usually live is incorrect?

As an example I gave in the other thread, even in Miami Beach, which is packed, there are areas of the beach where it is practically empty.

You should/can make sure that people are aware and take it into consideration, but the fact that people do go doesn't automatically make them ignore tznius considerations.

A Rebbe was once walking with his gabbai when the gabbai started making an unplanned detour, the Rebbe asked the gabbai why are you diverting? The gabbai said that there's a woman there, so the Rebbe said, you see a woman, I see a tree.

Miami can possibly be done. Miami Beach is difficult. Cancun as per several individuals who went recently in s impossible without locking yourself in the hotel. Can’t do the shopping areas, dining, attractions or anything else without people in beach attire. Unless you are a rebbe and bring your own trees of course.

When I was in yeshiva in Belle Harbor a well known Rosh Yeshiva was there to rest after surgery and went for a walk with his son on the boardwalk on a hot summer shabbos afternoon.

Interesting. So is the takeaway that strolling along the beach in the middle of summer is fine?

And Rabbi Bursztyn was told by Rav Moshe he could go to the Rockaway Beach half a century ago to recuperate. Neither were anything like Cancun and both were tzorech Refuah and likely ליכא דרכא אחרינא.

Ain’t no one eyeing them trees when they are bare.
