A great post by caliheat:
I believe that there are many factors when deciding what laptop to purchase.
1) What is your intended use and necessary features. e.g. light use vs. heavy use & optical drive, computer speed etc.
2) As mentioned several times in this thread, RAM itself is very easy to upgrade after you purchase.
3) Brand - IMHO this is pretty important as well - which do your prefer vs. which brand do people recommend.
4) Price - you should decide a price range that best suits your needs.
5) Operating System - Many people like myself prefer Windows 7 vs. 8.1, so this would be another consideration.
6) Warranty - does it include 1 year or more, cost for extending warranty.
7) Detailed Specs:
  Processor  - model and speed i3, i5, & i7 2.0 Ghz, 3.0 Ghz etc.
RAM - This IMHO should be minimum 8GB, especially if running 8.1, however can be added easily.
Hard Drive - SATA vs. SSD, the latter being much faster. SATA itself offers 5400 RPM vs. 7200 RPM again, the latter being faster.
Screen Size - this is a personal preference as you can always attach a larger screen in an office setting.
Battery & Weight - overall laptop weight preference & battery life.
Graphics - Integrated graphics vs. dedicated graphics, e.g. Intel 4400 vs. Nvidia GTX etc.

In summary, you have to decide what are you priorities, what can be upgraded and what you are flexible on.

Excellent article about the differences between the Intel processor suffixes.

It's not for me. Trying to help out a shliach. I have actually found that buying groups have great suggestions for laptops, especially with the 10% off from dell.

There were a few options from SD.

I found these on ebay refurbished.

Still haven't decided what to do.

I'm leery of refurbished computers, especially if they are cheaper builds. (IOW, a 4 year old used Thinkpad would be expected work, a 4 year old Ideapad, not so much)

Here are some available computers in that price range. I'm assuming if the major factor is price, the size isn't.

The Mevinim can argue these out

https://www.officedepot.com/a/products/9304611/ASUS-VivoBook-15-F512DA-DB34-Laptop/ $329 office depot store pickup
Asus 15 inch. Ryzen 3 3250u 8gb ram

https://deals.dell.com/en-us/mpp/productdetail/8dzg $328.30 (dell, before codes)
Inspiron 3000 15 inch. Ryzen 3 3250u 4gb ram

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Gateway-15-6-FHD-Ultra-Slim-Notebook-AMD-Ryzen-5-3450U-8GB-RAM-256GB-SSD-Tuned-THX-Audio-Fingerprint-Scanner-1MP-Webcam-HDMI-Cortana-Windows-10-Home-/103459429?selected=true $350
Gateway 15 inch. Ryzen 5 3450u 8gb ram

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Lenovo-IdeaPad-Flex-5-14-FHD-Convertible-AMD-Ryzen-3-4300U-4GB-RAM-128GB-SSD-Graphite-Grey-Windows-10S-81X2000HUS/829136096 $369
Lenovo Flex 5 14inch. ryzen 3 4300u, 4 gb ram

https://deals.dell.com/en-us/mpp/productdetail/8dzi $401.79 (dell, before codes)
Inspiron 3000 15 inch. i3 11th gen 8gb ram

https://www.dell.com/en-us/member/shop/cty/pdp/spd/inspiron-14-5402-laptop/nn5402ejnwh?cartitemid=068600ae-3450-4cd5-98ef-152f034f3981&ref=carconfigedittitle&configurationid=a80dc987-06ff-4639-8ab2-bd8c8051c8bc $416.50 (dell, before codes)
inspiron 5000 14 inch. i3 11th gen, 4gb ram

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Gateway-14-1-FHD-Ultra-Slim-Notebook-Intel-Core-i5-1035G1-16GB-RAM-256GB-SSD-Tuned-THX-Audio-Fingerprint-Scanner-Webcam-HDMI-Cortana-Windows-10-Home/828696636 $429
Gateway 14inch, i5 10th gen 16gb

For comparison sake, the CPUs mentioned here are roughly in this order, weaker to stronger Ryzen 3 3250u < Ryzen 5 3450u < i3 11 < i5 10 < Ryzen 3 4300u.
ram speeds arent as important as total ram, so I didn't mention. Flex 5 and Inspiron 5000 are mid level builds, the other seem to be cheaper.

I think I'd go with the i5 Gateway (just buy a mouse, they say the trackpads aren't great) or the 8gb ram dell. The office depot one is good too, if in stock near you.

Return if it's not adequate......

Or bump your budget to $589 and get this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B086226DDB . I'm currently using the intel version of it, very satisfied, though screen is dim.

or $749.70 (before codes) for a great machine, see DDMS psot

I'm looking for a chromebook to do some basic photo viewing and sorting on. Needs a decent screen, the rest of the specs don't matter too much. Anyone know of anything in the $220 range?
I tried a chromebook duet, very impressive, and has a bright screen. But its way too small.

I can use a windows laptop too, but anything in that range has a bad screen and poor build.
anyone?

What is the best option for a non-mac laptop that is in the same class as the Macbook in terms of performance and durability? (In the 900-1400 price range)

Samsung just came out with a new line of hi spec reasonably priced laptops. I've been working on a Samsung laptop for 3 years and have only good things to say.

Just buy a Mac and install windows :)

The lenovo Yoga line is very good. The 7 line is good, the 9 line is amazing. The 15 inches are too heavy, The 14 are great. The 7 is on sale for under $1k, the 9 is currently around $1400 but can pick one up for $1100 if you wait. (i7 16gb versions. Check also screen brightness before you buy). 7i and 9i are convertibles/2in1s, the 7 slim and 9 slim are not.

If you need something thinner, the surface pros and samsung's laptops are supposedly very good. I haven't used them personally. From what I gather they are very good for drawing and media, but not as good as more traditional laptops for multitasking heavy programs

I use a Samsung for heavy multi tasking regular programs. It's oldish and it's dual core not quad. It's very very good.

Acer chromebook spin 713 $429

Powerful for a chromebook with a 10th gen i5, 8gb ram, and 128gb real ssd (not the slower emmc)

The selling point here is the screen, over 400nits of brightness and 2k resolution. Color from what I've read is decent.

Slightly more expensive than what you'd usually want to spend on a chromebook for your kid's homework, but seems to be a very good buy if a good screen chromebook is on your shopping list.
