A great post by caliheat:
I believe that there are many factors when deciding what laptop to purchase.
1) What is your intended use and necessary features. e.g. light use vs. heavy use & optical drive, computer speed etc.
2) As mentioned several times in this thread, RAM itself is very easy to upgrade after you purchase. EDIT: Unless there are no RAM slots for upgrading.
3) Brand - IMHO this is pretty important as well - which do your prefer vs. which brand do people recommend.
4) Price - you should decide a price range that best suits your needs.
5) Operating System - Many people like myself prefer Windows 7 vs. 8.1, so this would be another consideration.
6) Warranty - does it include 1 year or more, cost for extending warranty.
7) Detailed Specs:
  Processor  - model and speed i3, i5, & i7 2.0 Ghz, 3.0 Ghz etc.
RAM - This IMHO should be minimum 8GB, especially if running 8.1, however can be added easily.
Hard Drive - SATA vs. SSD, the latter being much faster. SATA itself offers 5400 RPM vs. 7200 RPM again, the latter being faster.
Screen Size - this is a personal preference as you can always attach a larger screen in an office setting.
Battery & Weight - overall laptop weight preference & battery life.
Graphics - Integrated graphics vs. dedicated graphics, e.g. Intel 4400 vs. Nvidia GTX etc.

In summary, you have to decide what are you priorities, what can be upgraded and what you are flexible on.

Excellent article about the differences between the Intel processor suffixes.

Anyone try this yet?

Didn't check out the specs but I'd stay away from gateway

Good find.

The gateways have 16gb ram, the vostro 8.
Proper full info on both these laptops is not so easy to find (if anyone has a simple way of figuring out the full specs for a vostro, including materials, displays, etc. feel free to correct me)

I'd take the vostro The reviews I've seen (online and from friends) on the gateway say its a low end device, with cheaper construction and short battery life. The screen is pretty dim, though it supposedly has an IPS.

The vostro, besides for the better processor, is most likely a better built device. Dell has three general vostro lines, 3000/5000/7000, so this is a midrange according to them.

I don't know by how much, but I'd wager it has longer battery, brighter screen, better functioning keypad, weighs less, will last longer. the 8gb ram is a bit concerning, but for the vast majority of tasks it will be fine, at least for the next few years.

All IMHO

Just make sure you know which size laptop you want. A 15.6 inch and a 14 inch are not the same thing at all.

Battery never really an issue for
me As I very seldom move it from the
Desk

The other factors are more important and
thanks for the Info .

I had one for 2 days and returned it due to the trackpad acting funny. The performance was great though! (for the short time I had it...)

What's the difference between these two?
https://deals.dell.com/en-us/productdetail/9c3h
https://deals.dell.com/en-us/productdetail/9c4n

Anyone notice any deals on a 14inch for regular work, decent build quality? (i5, any size ssd, 8gb ram, non-horrible screen)

The Ryzen is definitely faster it has 4 cores and 8 threads as opposed to the i3 with 2 cores and 4 threads (if you are going to use the potential).

Looking for a marginally decent chromebook.

Looking at this one for $170  https://www.target.com/p/hp-14-34-chromebook-laptop-with-chrome-os-intel-processor-4gb-ram-32gb-flash-storage-teal-14a-na0012tg/-/A-82569454

Anyone know of anything better?  Anything to know about this model?

The galaxy chromebook, acer spin 713, and yoga chromebook aren't on sale now
