A great post by caliheat:
I believe that there are many factors when deciding what laptop to purchase.
1) What is your intended use and necessary features. e.g. light use vs. heavy use & optical drive, computer speed etc.
2) As mentioned several times in this thread, RAM itself is very easy to upgrade after you purchase.
3) Brand - IMHO this is pretty important as well - which do your prefer vs. which brand do people recommend.
4) Price - you should decide a price range that best suits your needs.
5) Operating System - Many people like myself prefer Windows 7 vs. 8.1, so this would be another consideration.
6) Warranty - does it include 1 year or more, cost for extending warranty.
7) Detailed Specs:
  Processor  - model and speed i3, i5, & i7 2.0 Ghz, 3.0 Ghz etc.
RAM - This IMHO should be minimum 8GB, especially if running 8.1, however can be added easily.
Hard Drive - SATA vs. SSD, the latter being much faster. SATA itself offers 5400 RPM vs. 7200 RPM again, the latter being faster.
Screen Size - this is a personal preference as you can always attach a larger screen in an office setting.
Battery & Weight - overall laptop weight preference & battery life.
Graphics - Integrated graphics vs. dedicated graphics, e.g. Intel 4400 vs. Nvidia GTX etc.

In summary, you have to decide what are you priorities, what can be upgraded and what you are flexible on.

Excellent article about the differences between the Intel processor suffixes.

15.6 inches preferred. weight doesnt matter and neither does batt life
not sure of actual need but they are building websites  "Touch screen, with a good resolution so we can vet new web features properly."
i can upgrade the ram myself.

i am passing along info from someone else and i dont have much detail. also, they dont need to be brand new.
Thanks!
So: any 15-16 inch laptop, preferred touch, i5/Ryzen5 or better (building websites doesn't take much on that account), RAM that can scale to 32GB, decent resolution but excellent color accuracy.
If I see something nice I'll post here. Otherwise these are the specs you should look for. (For color accuracy you will need to look for manufacturer bragging or check reviews one by one.)

$800 one day sale - Swift X 16" with i7 and dedicated graphics (Intel A370 4GB) for professional graphics work
https://www.newegg.com/steel-gray-acer-swift-x-sfx16-52g-73u6-home-personal/p/N82E16834360196?Item=N82E16834360196&cm_sp=Dailydeal_SS-_-34-360-196-_-05012023
This computer is for pros who work with pictures and video, but don't want a monster of a computer. The computer has a beautiful, color-accurate screen, is under 4 lbs (excellent for the size considering the graphics) and gets you 8 hours of battery when the work is light. Only 16GB of non-upgradeable RAM, but it has a second M2 slot for PCIe 4.0 SSDs.
The Intel graphics is optimized for work-related things but not quite as good as nVidia in gaming (though it should be stellar for DX12 games and for older games it can max the graphic settings).

(13") Thinkpad X1 Nano with 11th gen i7 for $879, new.
Target audience: Someone who uses a computer for work and needs a very light and very small computer that travels well. Note that some really long flights will be too long for the battery. See below.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/125533439255

No personal experience with it, but based on reviews:
Pros: 2 pounds, tiny profile
16:10 screen
Despite this, decent battery life:

Cons: Shallower keyboard than other Thinkpads
Old. (This will be fast only for office work - don't expect stellar performance for anything intense.)
For the serial upgraders among you, the RAM is soldered and the SSD takes only M2 2242. With all the new SSDs for the Steam Deck, you can actually buy decent replacements, but they cost more than conventional M2 2280s.

Full review here: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-X1-Nano-Laptop-Review-Less-than-1-kg-for-the-Business-Subnotebook-with-LTE.517858.0.html

Competition? The Pavilion Aero, and Swift 3 or Zenbook, are both cheaper. The Aero isn't built as well and the Swift 3/Zbk are heavier. I suppose the Gram 13 is also comparable but it costs more (usually). Other more expensive options are the XPS (natch) and HP's Dragonfly, a stellar notebook but you will need to pay more for them. (You usually need to pay more for the Nano, so...)

Now $780. They are really getting desperate. Regarding the last paragraph above, the Zenbook is not cheaper nor lighter these days. I would also say that this is a better deal than the Pavilion Aero, and the Swift 3's battery life is now less - around the same as the deal here.

Thinkpad L14 G2 14" for $465. i5 11th gen, 16GB RAM and 256GB SSD. Use eCoupon THINKSPECIALSAVE.
https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/p/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpadl/thinkpad-l14-g2/20x1s1hh00
This is an okay deal even if it wasn't a Thinkpad, but once it is a Thinkpad it becomes an amazing deal.

Lenovo Ideapad 3 14" 11th gen i3 for $250. Only in person at a Micro Center.
i3-1115G4/8GB RAM/256GB SSD

Should be great for office work. Easy to get into if you need to upgrade. (4GB RAM is soldered, and 4GB is replaceable.)

Any ideas for a laptop just to write chidushei Torah on? No web needed, it will be blocked.
Should be small 13 inch, light, and cheap ($400 range)? Can upgrade my own ram if needed.

Which program will you use to write it?
I'm assuming it's Hebrew letters?

I dont know the importance of Ram. 12GB versus 8GB versus CPu   10th gen versus 11 gen etc for overall performance thus the request.
No touch screen looking at $499 or $599 starting price if that helps .
Thanks

This one is excellent value if a 14" is the right size for you. The 15/16 size is overpriced right now IMHO.

Unfortunately, you are going to have to compromise on something. Here's the list of your choices:
A) Compromise on processor and brand, and get something physically junky and also slow (for example, a $200-$300 Hyundai model with Celeron/Pentium and 4GB RAM, plus add your own SSD because it comes with an emmc drive you want to avoid using)
B) Compromise on the size you want and get a 14" instead. You can find this with an i3/Ryzen 3 for around $300 (may or may not need to add RAM but no biggie) or with an i5/Ryzen 5 for a bit more ($350 if lucky, under $400 for sure). These are decently light and much smaller these days (though it does depend on what you find).
C) Compromise on your budget. 13" models can be gotten at the $500 price.
https://www.microcenter.com/product/664284/hp-envy-13-ba1768nr-133-intel-evo-platform-laptop-computer-natural-silver
https://www.bestbuy.com/site/lenovo-yoga-6-13-3-wuxga-1920-x-1200-touch-2-in-1-laptop-ryzen-5-5500u-8gb-memory-256gb-ssd-dark-teal/6502221.p?skuId=6502221
D) Wait. It is rare but it does happen that 13" models drop in price. I know I posted one such deal upthread.
E) Get refurbs. I wouldn't. (Dell does have a refurbished Latitude for $450 with a full warranty, but...) https://outlet.us.dell.com/ARBOnlineSales/Online/SecondaryInventorySearch.aspx?c=us&cs=28&l=en&s=dfb&sign=PXhcOSHtr1T4IOw%2fPR7UdWlQfEsLaTcSAL33ynWV3wnpeB8RDGwEFBOrjRv1dwEPXBJO28IAv5v5Ztm9YhabTZb3qpZMsrmW0mHQAX5o6e%2bA%2f3zIphY4PHrO4JLg1gIpLGme1Nq%2bt2zJP9oXapFqYoX332oXV4VD%2foIKLCRR1g1fD89RuWa6FSCOSfdWaN%2f%2b

I was going to recommend the $200 hp stream 14. But I figured I'll wait until you respond.
I know you most probably think that's a horrible choice.

My parents used it just for that (word documents) and they were happy. It has long battery life. It's light fairly small.

Any ideas for a laptop just to write chidushei Torah on? No web needed, it will be blocked.
Should be small 13 inch, light, and cheap ($400 range)? Can upgrade my own ram if needed.
