A great post by caliheat:
I believe that there are many factors when deciding what laptop to purchase.
1) What is your intended use and necessary features. e.g. light use vs. heavy use & optical drive, computer speed etc.
2) As mentioned several times in this thread, RAM itself is very easy to upgrade after you purchase. EDIT: Unless there are no RAM slots for upgrading.
3) Brand - IMHO this is pretty important as well - which do your prefer vs. which brand do people recommend.
4) Price - you should decide a price range that best suits your needs.
5) Operating System - Many people like myself prefer Windows 7 vs. 8.1, so this would be another consideration.
6) Warranty - does it include 1 year or more, cost for extending warranty.
7) Detailed Specs:
  Processor  - model and speed i3, i5, & i7 2.0 Ghz, 3.0 Ghz etc.
RAM - This IMHO should be minimum 8GB, especially if running 8.1, however can be added easily.
Hard Drive - SATA vs. SSD, the latter being much faster. SATA itself offers 5400 RPM vs. 7200 RPM again, the latter being faster.
Screen Size - this is a personal preference as you can always attach a larger screen in an office setting.
Battery & Weight - overall laptop weight preference & battery life.
Graphics - Integrated graphics vs. dedicated graphics, e.g. Intel 4400 vs. Nvidia GTX etc.

In summary, you have to decide what are you priorities, what can be upgraded and what you are flexible on.

Excellent article about the differences between the Intel processor suffixes.

Most people turned off by the weight and the company. (MSI gets solid reviews for every laptop except the Modern, which is overpriced, and the GF ("Thin") series of gaming laptops. Reviewers seem to LOVE the Summit, complaining only about the MSRP - which is not nogea here.)

I’m looking for a high-end professional laptop. I prefer if it is around 16 inches. I typically use it for email, Word and google searches. I need it to be extremely quick. What do you suggest?

Metal builds / premium models
615   A 16" 2-in-1 with a processor hike over the previous two. Ideapad 5 16   Ryzen 7 8845HS (35W 8-core Zen 4+) 16GB soldered/512 SSD

700   The Intel flavor of the Ideapad 2-in-1 above. Much more powerful (but why?) VivoBook S 16 2i1   i7-13700H 16GB upgradeable/512GB SSD   https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-vivobook-s-flip-16-wuxga-touch-screen-laptop-intel-13th-gen-core-i7-with-16gb-memory-512gb-ssd-midnight-black/6579902.p?skuId=6579902

749   Now a large-screen 3K OLED option. VivoBook S 16 OLED    Core Ultra 7 155H 16GB/TB 331lbs   https://www.walmart.com/ip/ASUS-Vivobook-S-15-6-inch-3K-OLED-120Hz-Laptop-Intel-Core-Ultra-7-155H-Intel-Evo-Edition-16GB-RAM-1TB-SSD-Mist-Blue/5123764605?fulfillmentIntent=Shipping&filters=%5B%7B%22intent%22%3A%22fulfillmentIntent%22%2C%22values%22%3A%5B%22Shipping%22%5D%7D%5D&classType=REGULAR

850   Just takin' my 3lb 17" laptop for a stroll - without the charger... LG Gram 17    Core Ultra 5 125H 16GB soldered RAM/512GB SSD   LG gram 17-Inch Lightweight Laptop Intel Evo Edition - AI-enabled Intel Core Ultra 5 processor Windows 11 Home 16GB RAM 512GB SSD - Black ( )

1000   The large-screen portable with no compromises (well, except price, and see below for second option) Yoga Slim 7i Aura 15.3"   Core Ultra 7 256V 16GB soldered/TB SSD 320lbs 2xC 1xA    https://www.bestbuy.com/site/lenovo-yoga-slim-7i-aura-edition-copilot-pc-15-3-3k-touchscreen-laptop-intel-core-ultra-7-16gb-memory-1tb-ssd-luna-gray/6594998.p?skuId=6594998

1000   Compare with above. Swift 16 AI OLED touch   Core Ultra 7 256V 16GB soldered/TB SSD 337lbs 2xC 2xA   https://www.bestbuy.com/site/acer-swift-16-ai-16-3k-oled-touch-laptop-copilot-pc-intel-core-ultra-7-series-2-16gb-memory-1tb-ssd-ice-black/6598823.p?skuId=6598823

One of these. The most powerful is the $700 Vivovook, the best is between the last two, and consider the 17" Gram if the screen space might be an advantage.

Some reviews to check out regarding the XPS here.

Metal builds / premium models
...
1000   Trade the OLED screen for even better battery life and x86 compatibility. I would take it. XPS 134    Core Ultra 7 256V 16GB soldered/512GB SSD 2xC only    https://www.bestbuy.com/site/dell-xps-13-copilot-pc-13-4-fhd-laptop-intel-core-ultra-7-series-2-with-16gb-memory-512gb-ssd-graphite/6598704.p?skuId=6598704

https://www.notebookcheck.net/Dell-XPS-13-9350-laptop-review-Intel-Lunar-Lake-is-the-perfect-fit.911314.0.html

That idle measure is just for fun, but it is a good 10 hours or so more than the last winner (also Lunar Lake fwiw). Wifi is a custom test of theirs but run only at 250 nits.
Alternate take:
https://www.laptopmag.com/laptops/windows-laptops/dell-xps-13-9350
They compare the screen types (the link above is the non-OLED version):

There is one significant chisaron (aside for the layout which Dan and several reviewers hate), and that is that the laptop has only 2 USB C ports (Thunderbolt 4) - nothing else. No audio jack, no USB-A, no micro SD - nothing. Well, and it is expensive.

@mevinyavin, is this any good?

I prefer 12 or 16gb, but seems like a good price for this.

https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/p/laptops/ideapad/ideapad-300/lenovo-ideapad-slim-3i-gen-9-15-inch-intel/83e6000aus?orgRef=https%253A%252F%252Fwww.google.com%252F&srsltid=AfmBOop_3HU1Y-omOsL_tq1Zy9Vio5UgBth4-COwi78-8ovjcu9L_ZLw
I think it might be shabbos for him already (or close to it) so don't expect a response until tomorrow night. If it looks good to you, you should probably order it before the price goes back up. Chances are you'll still be able to cancel the order if you want to when he responds.

Good price. But you really shouldn't be buying 8gb laptops anymore, especially soldered RAM, which is not upgradeable down the road.

Get the aspire above (12gb) or if you can find the following $400 slim 3 for pickup. Get that. And add the $40 giftcard for free

No idea. It isn't letting me see it because it is out of stock.
Regarding the Office Depot alternative, I am hereby declaring that they (and Office Max) block IPs from outside the country so I definitely cannot weigh in on those.
Regarding 8GB of RAM, what he said - don't buy it unless it is upgradeable and you are willing to do so unless:
A) it is $300 or so
B) you have low expectations for its performance
C) you can't get upgradeable for around the same price, even with an older processor (within reason)

C hasn't been true for a long while, so...

X1 Carbon starts at $1000. The Rosh Chaburah has one of these with a 7th gen i7 that is still going strong (and it isn't slow). They are very well built, very light, and have good (though not excellent) battery life.
$1000 gets: Core Ultra 5 125U, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 400 nits IPS screen, Windows.
(Option on the left.) I have never seen it for less than $1200, fwiw.

If you are handy, go to the customizable version, which is the only place you can find a Core Ultra 5 125H (a world of a difference - probably the only way it will still be fast in a few years). (Core Ultra 7 155H is also a solid choice.) Unfortunately, this adds $300 to the price, which may not be worth it. You can save money (maybe) on the following:
-Bring your own Windows license (saves $140)
-Remove touch (saves $60) - though you can also upgrade to OLED if you prefer a pretty screen and half the battery life
-Do your own SSD upgrade when you run out of the paltry 256GB SSD. (This is more complicated than average - PM me.)
You do both of those and the price is $1210 (125H) or $1290 (155H).  Your call.
