A great post by caliheat:
I believe that there are many factors when deciding what laptop to purchase.
1) What is your intended use and necessary features. e.g. light use vs. heavy use & optical drive, computer speed etc.
2) As mentioned several times in this thread, RAM itself is very easy to upgrade after you purchase. EDIT: Unless there are no RAM slots for upgrading.
3) Brand - IMHO this is pretty important as well - which do your prefer vs. which brand do people recommend.
4) Price - you should decide a price range that best suits your needs.
5) Operating System - Many people like myself prefer Windows 7 vs. 8.1, so this would be another consideration.
6) Warranty - does it include 1 year or more, cost for extending warranty.
7) Detailed Specs:
  Processor  - model and speed i3, i5, & i7 2.0 Ghz, 3.0 Ghz etc.
RAM - This IMHO should be minimum 8GB, especially if running 8.1, however can be added easily.
Hard Drive - SATA vs. SSD, the latter being much faster. SATA itself offers 5400 RPM vs. 7200 RPM again, the latter being faster.
Screen Size - this is a personal preference as you can always attach a larger screen in an office setting.
Battery & Weight - overall laptop weight preference & battery life.
Graphics - Integrated graphics vs. dedicated graphics, e.g. Intel 4400 vs. Nvidia GTX etc.

In summary, you have to decide what are you priorities, what can be upgraded and what you are flexible on.

Excellent article about the differences between the Intel processor suffixes.

Or this staples laptop you previously posted now down to $849  https://www.staples.com/asus-vivobook-s-16-2-8k-oled-laptop-copilot-pc-intel-core-ultra-9-285h-16gb-ram-1tb-ssd-backlit-keyboard-windows-11/product_24632444. Whitch is a better one to chose ?
The Dell is heavier and has better battery life. The ASUS is lighter and is a 2 in 1, has a better screen and a more powerful processor*. They are both good computers.
*If it has a more powerful processor and isn't a mistake, as noted in the post there.

Going on sale for $550 tomorrow.
(2k is a fake term)
Still $550
The Intel version with oled is now $630 at hp, if you have the $50 chase offer, it's around the same price. Not sure how much better oled is. Title and spec list disagree if it's intel core Ultra 5 or Ultra 7.
I'd probably go with the Costco one, unless seeing them in person tells me the screen is better. H

Refurbished Macbook pro 2020 intel i5 (8th gen) 16gb 512g $449
Also m1 refurbished available, but that's 8gb/256gb
Some other deals too.
Looks decent for someone in the macbook or nothing crowd. It's likely worth spending almost double and getting the $850 m4/16gb/256gb macbook air at Amazon or Costco

The reid was that Intel Macbooks underperformed and were good only for office work - and if so, you can do better for modern Windows laptops at that price. Though the M1 Macbook for $650 (perpetually on sale at Walmart) is compelling, because when it stole space on the SSD when 8GB RAM was saturated, it was almost as fast because of the quality SSD (unlike the M2/M3 Macbooks with 256GB SSDs).

Looking for a small laptop running Windows OS. 13" or smaller would be best but 14" could also work.
Very basic specs, as it will only be used to run a Windows-based EMR system.

$385 for open box. What keeps it from being an amazing deal for a sleek high end computer is the 8gb soldered RAM, which is not a problem in your case. But maybe higher than you want to spend...

Is this good for the price:
https://www.amazon.com/HP-Touchscreen-Laptop-Computer-Fingerprint/dp/B0F8VL8F2X?tag=cl03f-20

Anyone have something good for the price for programming? (around 1000$)
or maybe with a little smaller screen

Thanks

Dell 14 Plus with Lunar Lake CU7 256V, 16GB RAM and TB SSD, 2.5K IPS for $750 before Dell Amex discounts. Cons include screen brightness (a mere 300nits) and heavier than other laptops in its class (3.42lbs). Pros include massive battery life, metal body.

For someone that wants such a type device, would you say it's worth the $100 more than the previous generation of this model (https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-laptops/inspiron-14-laptop/spd/inspiron-14-5440-laptop/useichbts5440gsss)?

Minor differences, like newer gen CPU and graphics, with TB output.

Lunar Lake is radically different. Efficiency sometimes results in double Meteor Lake's battery life (granted that in this case, reviews are showing about the same). In addition, the Arc 140V in Lunar Lake is worlds better than Meteor Lake's Arc graphics, possibly also due to the RAM being located inside the processor package instead of elsewhere on the motherboard.
In this instance, being that battery life seems about the same, I would say that $100 is a lot unless you are stressing the graphics.

To return to this topic: the full set of reviews are out. Dell XX Plus models are worse in almost every way than the Inspiron XX plus they replace:
CPU performance is down (like all Meteor Lake versus Lunar Lake models)
SSD is worse, throttling at 3.5GBps versus the steady 5GBPs of the previous models
Battery is smaller, doing worse than eliminating the gains from Lunar Lake
Port distribution is worse (though some ports are better)

However,
Weight is a bit less (probably entirely due to smaller battery) and the computer is slightly thinner
Graphics is better (again, like all Meteor Lake versus Lunar Lake models)

Goes on sale this week for $550

Of course, can still get it on Ebay for $500, though that one has 512 ssd, while Costco version has 1tb
$599 Swift t B&H is the better buy IMHO. Though it is more money, so this has its place, especially if you need the extra space.

In between we have a new HP aero for $550. Comes in at 2.2lbs, up to date shmancy Ryzen AI chip

The battery is a small 43whr. And while I can't find much info in the Ryzen 5 340 chip, seems it's underpowered both in general and in graphics. So the swift seems a better buy, touchscreen, more power, and a 65whr battery, at the cost of being 0.7 lbs heavier.
