I called Dell to get return details for the 15z ultrabook from 3 weeks ago. They confirmed that there is no restocking fee, and that they pay return shipping. The guy right then offers me $25 credit back to my amex to keep the laptop. I hemmed and hawed until he offers $50, I asked for $100 he says let me check with my supervisor. He comes back with $65 if I keep the laptop.

Total paid;
$799
-$100 instant coupon
-$150 Dell Amex Twitter promo
-$150 Dell gift card
-$65 "retention"
=$334 (+ $47 sales tax)

this might be a stupid question, but the $1000 needed to get the 10% from amex open savings could be from the tax and shipping charges as well, right?

i figure amex doesnt know how much the computer is vs the tax and shipping, but wanted to verify

I think tax and shipping is included.

But the way it works, until you spend $1000 you will get only 5% credit.

If you spend $1100 - You will get 5% On the first $1000, and 10% thereon

HP Probooks are usually good systems - as far as the price is concerned, I don't think its an amazing price. see here pretty much same price.

I'm looking for a new laptop for business and personal use. It should be i5 equivalent or better and have a quick HD. I prefer to have an optical drive, but not crucial. I do some traveling, so i would be open to a lighter laptop. Most importantly, it has to be reliable. Any suggestions?
