Warning: most of the wiki that follows was written a very long time ago and the information on it can be outdated.

I believe that there are many factors when deciding what laptop to purchase.
1) What is your intended use and necessary features. e.g. light use vs. heavy use & optical drive, computer speed etc.
2) As mentioned several times in this thread, RAM itself is very easy to upgrade after you purchase. EDIT: Unless there are no RAM slots for upgrading.
3) Brand - IMHO this is pretty important as well - which do your prefer vs. which brand do people recommend.
4) Price - you should decide a price range that best suits your needs.
5) Operating System - Many people like myself prefer Windows 7 vs. 8.1, so this would be another consideration.
6) Warranty - does it include 1 year or more, cost for extending warranty.
7) Detailed Specs:
  Processor  - model and speed i3, i5, & i7 2.0 Ghz, 3.0 Ghz etc.
  RAM - This IMHO should be minimum 8GB, especially if running 8.1, however can be added easily.
  Hard Drive - SATA vs. SSD, the latter being much faster. SATA itself offers 5400 RPM vs. 7200 RPM again, the latter being faster.
  Screen Size - this is a personal preference as you can always attach a larger screen in an office setting.
  Battery & Weight - overall laptop weight preference & battery life.
  Graphics - Integrated graphics vs. dedicated graphics, e.g. Intel 4400 vs. Nvidia GTX etc.

In summary, you have to decide what are you priorities, what can be upgraded and what you are flexible on.

It's $20 cheaper + $25 that makes it a better price. $399 for 17" i3 4th Gen is a decent deal, this makes it better.

I'm looking to get a laptop with the following minimum specs:

-15 inch, high resolution screen.
-4th gen i7
-slim form factor
-8gb RAM

I have a vague plan here, perhaps someone can help me put the pieces together:

This is currently at $879 http://bit.ly/J0gTWz (supposedly down from $1,080).

Combine with $15 coupon: $865

NY taxes: $76.68

Total: $940.68

Now, I want to combine this with the Amex OPEN 10% discount, but the discount requires a $1,000 minimum purchase, otherwise it's only 5%

First, is this a decent deal? second, any idea how to maximize the Amex discount?

Any help would be appreciated.

Weird request, doesn't need to be a "deal"; more important to meet the specs:
1. Using the computer for office work such as internet and word etc, so it doesn't need to be super fast, but I don't want to be slowed down by the computer.
2. 15.6 inch screen or bigger.
3. Windows 7
4. "Flush" keyboard. I don't want spaces in between the keys.

Any help is much appreciated.

Why is Windows 7 a factor? You can buy any Windows 8 computer and install Windows 7. (obviously don't bother getting a touchscreen model)

Installing is free, but if you don't know how to install it then I understand your concern. (It's really just a matter of installing and downloading some drivers to match your hardware).

As for buying... well, let's just say if you want to play it by the book, you can get a copy on ebay for approx $70.
