Dell:
Precision - Very powerful desktop replacements - great warranty, ridiculously expensive - Usually overpriced or overkill

Latitude - Good Laptops - Great warranty! Highly recommended for any Business environment - Sometimes expensive.

Vostro  - Lower end Business Machines - Better Priced - still durable - Usually 1 Year warranty.

XPS - The nicer looking dell machines, Some are better than others...

Inspiron - YMMV Every model is different

(Plain) Insprion Series - Dells lowest end laptop
(R) Insprion Series - Perfect Home use, dependable, decent build quality, recommended
(Z) Insprion Series - A little slimmer than the R series, Some are Ultrabooks (Very often don't include Optical Drives)

HP:

Spectre - Top of the line personal (dragonfly is the top of the line for business) - lightest laptops, and beautiful!

Pavilion - YMMV (Some better than others)

Probook - Stable durable business systems - Usually a little on the heavy side.

Elitebook - Business Higher end systems, usually pretty expensive

ENVY - Used to be the HP sleek and nicer systems, they pretty much replaced most of the standard pavilions now and call them either ENVY or sleekbooks

Sleekbook - like it sounds slimmer line of laptops

Lenovo:

Thinkpad Series - Very Dependable Business Machine, Expensive (Not Pretty but Durable)

IdeaPad Series -

S Series
U Series - Usually the slimmer line Ultrabooks, Doesn't always include DVD Drive
Y Series - Nice machines with good specs and features (Cool Backlit Keyboards)
Z Series - Step up from the G Series, all around decent build, priced nicely, great home use laptop
G Series - Lower end

Samsung:

Series 3
Series 5
Series 7
Series 9 - The nicest, sleekest looking laptops I've seen in a long time - Can pass for a Macbook!!

A great post by caliheat:
I believe that there are many factors when deciding what laptop to purchase.
1) What is your intended use and necessary features. e.g. light use vs. heavy use & optical drive, computer speed etc.
2) As mentioned several times in this thread, RAM itself is very easy to upgrade after you purchase.
3) Brand - IMHO this is pretty important as well - which do your prefer vs. which brand do people recommend.
4) Price - you should decide a price range that best suits your needs.
5) Operating System - Many people like myself prefer Windows 7 vs. 8.1, so this would be another consideration.
6) Warranty - does it include 1 year or more, cost for extending warranty.
7) Detailed Specs:
  Processor  - model and speed i3, i5, & i7 2.0 Ghz, 3.0 Ghz etc.
RAM - This IMHO should be minimum 8GB, especially if running 8.1, however can be added easily.
Hard Drive - SATA vs. SSD, the latter being much faster. SATA itself offers 5400 RPM vs. 7200 RPM again, the latter being faster.
Screen Size - this is a personal preference as you can always attach a larger screen in an office setting.
Battery & Weight - overall laptop weight preference & battery life.
Graphics - Integrated graphics vs. dedicated graphics, e.g. Intel 4400 vs. Nvidia GTX etc.

In summary, you have to decide what are you priorities, what can be upgraded and what you are flexible on.

Excellent article about the differences between the Intel processor suffixes.

https://www.dansdeals.com/shopping-deals/electronics/notebooks/ends-tonight-roundup-best-hp-cyber-monday-laptop-deals/ Which did you order? the 14 and 15 inch in this post are at least pavilion, the 17 is the lower tier. (There are for sure different levels in pavilion but unlike lenovo and dell, they don't number them to easily tell the difference.)

https://www.dansdeals.com/shopping-deals/electronics/notebooks/hot-hurry-hp-pavilion-14-core-i5-laptop-256gb-ssd-294-99-329-99-upgradeable-i7-plus-get-warranty-rebate/ This one looked good to me. Getting a newest gen i5, 8gb ram and FHD screen for under $400 is a great deal even if it's a plastic build. It may not last as long as a higher end computer, but that's the reason you paid less.....

Let us know how it works for you.
I ordered this one.

Upgraded to FHD touch screen and backlit keyboard. wasn't sure if I should upgrade to 512gb SSD for $90 and I didn't

Is the Lenovo T490 for $750 a good deal?  I have a 14 inch Asus about three years old, and am generally happy except the screen has not felt comfortable for a long time.  Its either too dark (off battery) or washed out.  May be time for an upgrade?

Not many good deals out there now.

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Gateway-15-6-FHD-Ultra-Slim-Notebook-Intel-Core-i5-1035G1-16GB-RAM-256GB-SSD-Tuned-THX-Audio-Webcam-HDMI-Fingerprint-Scanner-Cortana-Windows-10-Home-/225790553  $400, basic computer. Under the hood its got a 10th gen i5 and 16gb ram. Screen seems decent too, FHD IPS.

Fingerprint reader, non backlit keyboard

What makes it basic and not a sizzling deal is the build quality. It's a new (or refreshed, depends on your age  ;) ) line, and the jury is still out if it'll hold up well. That said, reviews I got from some friends say it's a low quality build. (weight is also not great) So for "basic", today, at $400 it's fine.

One specific issue to look out for is the trackpad reportedly has some wacky stuff happen. if that happens, and updating the drivers doesn't help, return and forget about it.

If your budget is higher, wait a bit, $500-$650 range should have better ones within the next few weeks.

(all IMHO)

I got this deal-
 https://www.dansdeals.com/shopping-deals/electronics/notebooks/hot-hurry-hp-pavilion-14-core-i5-laptop-256gb-ssd-294-99-329-99-upgradeable-i7-plus-get-warranty-rebate/
I upgraded a lot including the best screen with touchscreen. I got it today but without the touch. On the confirmation email I don’t see touch there and now on their website they don’t give the touch option. Did anyone have the same issue?

Check on your order received email it should give you a breakdown of what you ordered.
Unfortunately often times the highest upgrade screen won't include a touch screen. Like they can have a 720p display touch screen for +$50 then a 1080p non touch screen for +$70.

Email doesn’t show it either but I was pretty sure I ordered it.. that why I asked if this happened to anyone else...

I'm sort of in the market for a new laptop, primarily for home use and for business use when traveling.

I currently have a Lenovo Flex 15.6" which I love, but it's starting to feel flimsy and a little slow. Specs:
-Core i7-6500 Processor
-15.6″ IPS Full HD Touchscreen
-128GB Solid State Drive
-8GB RAM
-Backlit Keyboard
-Windows 10 Home 64-Bit

What should I be looking for? I must have the backlit keyboard, but I'm wondering if the touchscreen is really necessary, as I usually hook up a second monitor which obviously isn't touch.

Advice is appreciated.

I have the Dell xps 13 and I love it.

Only issue I have, which I've seen other complain about in reviews, is the shutdown. I never figured out how to use standby without it freezing up and needing to be restarted. I just shut down completely every time I'm done using it (but having a SSD, I can have it up and running in seconds).

Otherwise I really like it. It's really strong and durable, which I need for heavy use. I like the way it runs, and I never had any other issues.

Feel free to ask specific questions about it if you have any.

Thanks, no specific questions,  I just need a new laptop for basic use- office/zoom/streaming etc. And these were the 2 laptops that came up on multiple searches for top laptops under 1k
