A great post by caliheat:
I believe that there are many factors when deciding what laptop to purchase.
1) What is your intended use and necessary features. e.g. light use vs. heavy use & optical drive, computer speed etc.
2) As mentioned several times in this thread, RAM itself is very easy to upgrade after you purchase.
3) Brand - IMHO this is pretty important as well - which do your prefer vs. which brand do people recommend.
4) Price - you should decide a price range that best suits your needs.
5) Operating System - Many people like myself prefer Windows 7 vs. 8.1, so this would be another consideration.
6) Warranty - does it include 1 year or more, cost for extending warranty.
7) Detailed Specs:
  Processor  - model and speed i3, i5, & i7 2.0 Ghz, 3.0 Ghz etc.
RAM - This IMHO should be minimum 8GB, especially if running 8.1, however can be added easily.
Hard Drive - SATA vs. SSD, the latter being much faster. SATA itself offers 5400 RPM vs. 7200 RPM again, the latter being faster.
Screen Size - this is a personal preference as you can always attach a larger screen in an office setting.
Battery & Weight - overall laptop weight preference & battery life.
Graphics - Integrated graphics vs. dedicated graphics, e.g. Intel 4400 vs. Nvidia GTX etc.

In summary, you have to decide what are you priorities, what can be upgraded and what you are flexible on.

Excellent article about the differences between the Intel processor suffixes.

I don't have an answer for you, but to throw in a Dell (a lot of folks will argue that Dell Inspiron is a better company and model than all the ones you mentioned):
Inspiron 15 3000 Laptop 15.6" FHD Non-Touch display, i7-1165G7 Processor, 12 GB DDR4 2666 MHz, 512 GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD $587.99

Thank you for your reply.

Oh boy, if Dell Inspiron is better than all of those, then I'm in trouble...

I'm coming from my current Dell Inspiron 15 i5559 (8GB) which I'm absolutely fed up with.

Besides for the overall slowness (granted it's not an SSD), and other constant routine problems, the display is in horrendous shape (have to whack it up every time to get to the normal screen instead of being covered in colors), and earlier on in it's life (till I turned off the touch screen) the mouse cursor would often tantrum and go haywire to have a mind of it's own and jump all around the screen uncontrollably clicking away as if I've been hacked.

I didn't say "it is better".... Just that that's what a lot of folks would argue (in general that Dell is better, and especially when compared to lower grade models from Lenovo and HP.)

What you describe sounds very much like a physical damage to the screen, and I don't think any standard laptop would fare better when obtaining physical damage.

As for slowness I bet the SSD, better processor (not sure you had an i7 but certainly not a recent gen one), and the more RAM would certainly result in better performance.

We don't recall any damage we're aware of. It started at a random time.

I am in search of a new laptop Looking for a decent deal for standard usage, 15.6"+ display, 500+ GB SSD.

ASUS VivoBook S712UA $650 not worth it with a 250 nit screen
Ideapad 1 ~ 82R4002PUS $580 Plastic build, no Usb c charging, ok screen. Pass
Acer 15.6" Aspire 5 $630 Cheap build, not worth it at that price.
HP 17-cn1063cl 17.3" $500 plastic build, Good price for the specs. I'd pass

I'd pass on anything in the Dell Inspiron 3000 line at over $450

IdeaPad 5 ~ 82FG015XUS  $600 Good reliable computer. Screen ok. Metal. 16gb ram. It's a good choice, but possibly a bit of a stretch at $600. Last gen i5....
Ideapad 5 Pro 82L500F5US 16-inch Ryzen 5 5600H $470 Good price, Solid metal build. Non-touch. The only other concern is the 8gb ram, which isn't ideal, especially paired with an AMD cpu. (better in a lot of ways, but reserves more ram than intel).

Suggestions:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/155054449935 Ideapad 5i 15.6. $600. seems to be better in every way than the B&H one, but I can't get the full details on the screen. Ebay from lenovo. 12th gen i5, 16gb ram. touchscreen
https://www.bestbuy.com/site/lenovo-yoga-7i-16-2-5k-touch-2-in-1-laptop-intel-evo-platform-core-i5-1240p-8gb-memory-256gb-ssd-storm-grey/6502225.p $600. High end laptop. Good screen. The only issue here is 8gb ram. I'd risk it on this one, The i5-1240p is a strong cpu, less ram reserved than the AMD.

Remember that 16/17 inches is a different class than 15. like .6lbs more. I'm assuming you are mostly using it in once place if you are considering that size. in which case, go for the larger.

How much of a concern is the ram? I tend to keep open tons of browser windows and tabs at once.

HP 17-cn1063cl 17.3" $500 plastic build, Good price for the specs. I'd pass
Would that still be better than this HP (being both near $500)?

Yes, I'd prefer 17", which is another advantage of that aforementioned HP...

This is a 256gb SSD, looking for 500+.

I messaged them about the screen. But you believe it's definitely worth getting this one over the above Lenovo or HP at ~500, correct?
*ETA: They responded with the screen specs "The screen specs for this IdeaPad are 15.6" FHD (1920 x 1080), IPS, Anti-Glare, Touch, 45%NTSC, 300 nits, 60Hz, LED Backlight, Narrow Bezel."

A big concern. 8 GB is basic, and this will slow you down.

Open task manager while working and check how much ram is usually in use. If it's close to 8gb, it's going to be problem.

I'd argue though that on the Yoga the 8gb issue is outweighed by the rest of the specs.... It's a high-end computer, will last a long time, and is currently a great price. 256gb is not ideal, but anyways a backup external HD is a good idea instead of storing everything on the computer.

I see this actually just doubled in price :-\
Kinda, scroll up and you'll see other versions of this laptop were recently on sale. I don't think it's work $900

I'm not sure how the Lenovo Anti-glare screens preform. With that small caveat, Yes, better than the HP or the other lenovo.

45% ntsc is a concern if you are doing graphic design or photo editing. Otherwise fine. It's no worse than the other two.

So between these 2 Lenovo's (I have no favoritism to Lenovo, I guess these are just the best deals now for a 16" budget laptop with decent specs?):

You think that it's worth buying the Yoga over the Ideapad even though the Ideapad is double the RAM and ROM?!
The risk of that lowish ram makes me uneasy...

It's a good point, and I'm not sure.

Personally, I'd rather the better screen, slightly stronger processor, and better build over the more ram. But, if you use a lot of heavy programs, the 8gb ram is a no go.

Everybody is going to have a different definition of what basic office work entails, but according to most standard definitions, you should be fine with options well below $900. If you want a solid setup, i wild say you should be looking for an 11th generation i5 or the AMD equivalent (although an i3 would likely do job just fine), 16 GB of RAM (although 8 GB really does satisfy many use cases, and it's pretty easy to add RAM if there is an available slot and it's not soldered), 512 GB SSD or 256 GB SSD + 1TB HDD, a 1080 display or better, and a reputable company. If you're not planning on using it on the go too often, a 14"or 15.6" display may make more sense than 13.3". The above should cost $500-$600.

For example, this was posted above, and should meet all your requirements for $600. https://www.ebay.com/itm/155054449935

No sales tax in NJ on computers/printers/accessories now through Sep. 5th. See here: https://lnnnews.com/2022/08/27/back-to-school-sales-tax-holiday-begins-today-until-sep-5th/

Tried at bestbuy.com and they did not add sales tax at checkout to NJ address.
