A great post by caliheat:
I believe that there are many factors when deciding what laptop to purchase.
1) What is your intended use and necessary features. e.g. light use vs. heavy use & optical drive, computer speed etc.
2) As mentioned several times in this thread, RAM itself is very easy to upgrade after you purchase.
3) Brand - IMHO this is pretty important as well - which do your prefer vs. which brand do people recommend.
4) Price - you should decide a price range that best suits your needs.
5) Operating System - Many people like myself prefer Windows 7 vs. 8.1, so this would be another consideration.
6) Warranty - does it include 1 year or more, cost for extending warranty.
7) Detailed Specs:
  Processor  - model and speed i3, i5, & i7 2.0 Ghz, 3.0 Ghz etc.
RAM - This IMHO should be minimum 8GB, especially if running 8.1, however can be added easily.
Hard Drive - SATA vs. SSD, the latter being much faster. SATA itself offers 5400 RPM vs. 7200 RPM again, the latter being faster.
Screen Size - this is a personal preference as you can always attach a larger screen in an office setting.
Battery & Weight - overall laptop weight preference & battery life.
Graphics - Integrated graphics vs. dedicated graphics, e.g. Intel 4400 vs. Nvidia GTX etc.

In summary, you have to decide what are you priorities, what can be upgraded and what you are flexible on.

Excellent article about the differences between the Intel processor suffixes.

What's the difference between 1 and 2?
Processor is a tiny bit slower on 2, but I posted both in case 1 was out of stock.

Can't add to cart without buying some protection plan, did you have same issue?
Didn't see that when I posted it. Maybe Dell added it later, maybe I just didn't notice. Still a good deal with the price of an extended warranty, though. (And you get the warranty.)

13" Inspiron, 11th gen Intel, with some really good prices. It is rare to find 13" laptops this cheap. Obviously you can throw in your Dell discounts. Should we bring this to Dan's attention?
1-2 $350 for i5 11320H or 11300H, 8GB soldered RAM (no upgrade) and 512GB SSD.
3 $450 ups the resolution and the RAM to 16GB (still soldered). I would go for this one.
$500 for i7 but totally not worth it (also only 8GB RAM).
4 $550 gets you the i7, the 16GB, the better screen, and throws in the MX450 dedicated graphics. PM me if you think this might be for you.

When I posted this deal in this thread, I noted that #3 is the one that I would go for. There is no one that I can think of who can take advantage of the i7 versus the i5 yet only needs 8GB of soldered, non-upgradeable RAM. You should post the deal with the i5 instead. Too bad the one for $50 more with the i7, 16GB of RAM and dedicated graphics is sold out...

I guess next time I see something like this, I should actually page you instead of just posting in this thread. Yes?

Okay, but you should really at least mention the i5 version with 16GB RAM. IMHO it is a crime to buy a laptop with 8GB of RAM that isn't upgradeable unless you are spending very little - and here they do have one with 16GB for less. The downgrade to an i5 is totally worth it when almost no one is stressing out the processor in this computer. (I know the i7 makes a better headline...)

Technically, if there was a single advantage for the i7 over the i5 other than clock speed (there isn't).
However, as I said above (maybe you missed it, this was buried in the thread and you are a busy man): 8GB of non-upgradeable RAM is a deal-breaker for anyone who can actually use the i7's advantage over the i5. And the i5 has 16GB of RAM. So more nogea to office-work people who do not need anywhere near the i5 but are getting it anyway.

EDIT: That didn't come out so clear, so let me try again: 16GB of RAM is better for everyone who can use this computer. As such, I would choose the i5 over the i7 even if they were the same price:D

Can anyone comment on this budget 11.6” Lenovo - it’s $189 (it was recently $169), has 8gb ram and 128gb hd. Processor is celeron - I get it - but with these specs is this worth getting for ms word, email, internet and basic streaming ? It can also be used an external monitor and keyboard/mouse…

https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/p/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad11e/thinkpad-11e-(5th-gen)/20lqs06t00

Any input as to why I should not buy this cpu would be greatly appreciated!

TL;DR i5 16gb>i7 8gb
Not exactly. Only when the RAM isn't upgradeable. Otherwise it is situational. (In any case, the i5 and i7 in question are 11th gen and almost identical. This is unlike the 12th gen i5 and i7, which have major differences.)
Sigh...

It is fine for basic stuff, if you don't mind things running a bit slow. To put it in perspective, though: this is a budget processor from the end of 2019. It is now three years later. Don't expect this computer to be able to keep up with the internet in even a year or two. (Word should be okay forever.)
Agav, the computer will have to work a lot harder to run an external monitor. I don't advise it.

(13") Thinkpad X1 Nano with 11th gen i7 for $879, new.
Target audience: Someone who uses a computer for work and needs a very light and very small computer that travels well. Note that some really long flights will be too long for the battery. See below.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/125533439255

No personal experience with it, but based on reviews:
Pros: 2 pounds, tiny profile
16:10 screen
Despite this, decent battery life:

Cons: Shallower keyboard than other Thinkpads
Old. (This will be fast only for office work - don't expect stellar performance for anything intense.)
For the serial upgraders among you, the RAM is soldered and the SSD takes only M2 2242. With all the new SSDs for the Steam Deck, you can actually buy decent replacements, but they cost more than conventional M2 2280s.

Full review here: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-X1-Nano-Laptop-Review-Less-than-1-kg-for-the-Business-Subnotebook-with-LTE.517858.0.html

Competition? The Pavilion Aero, and Swift 3 or Zenbook, are both cheaper. The Aero isn't built as well and the Swift 3/Zbk are heavier. I suppose the Gram 13 is also comparable but it costs more (usually). Other more expensive options are the XPS (natch) and HP's Dragonfly, a stellar notebook but you will need to pay more for them. (You usually need to pay more for the Nano, so...)
$848. Guess they didn't sell enough of them last time. Good deal for the reasons enumerated above.

Back on sale after time spent at $1600. I now have two ecstatic graphics pros using this computer (literally - they were raving at how good it was). They didn't know you could get battery life, lightweight, well built systems that can still easily crunch any graphics-related problem (it is wild overkill, but you can't get portability with less power for less money, so...). Screen has great colors (said them). Only chisaron is the screen size for those that really need bigger.

Zephyrus G14 now $1100. Probably will sell out as the next year's model is on the way in.
https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-rog-zephyrus-14-wqxga-120hz-gaming-laptop-amd-ryzen-9-16gb-ddr5-memory-amd-radeon-rx-6700s-1tb-pcie-4-0-ssd/6494638.p?skuId=6494638&intl=nosplash
Ryzen 9 6900HS (a 45W TDP tweaked by AMD to run at 35W with almost the same power)
16GB DDR5
TB PCIe4 SSD
Radeon 6700S (runs somewhere between 3060 TI and 3070 in games, but like the 3070 in graphics work)
14" with great color range and 2560x1600
3.66 lbs
More than 9 hours of light use on battery

Review on this exact model here: https://www.ultrabookreview.com/55035-asus-zephyrus-g14-ga402rj-review/

This is for someone who needs tons of raw power but doesn't want to compromise on portability/battery life and is willing to use a 14" screen to accomplish that. It is wild overkill for things like Photoshop, but nevertheless sells itself even to those people because the portability and battery life are unmatched at this price. (To be fair, there are cheaper, more portable models capable of Photoshop - but they will struggle at intense workloads and this computer won't. If you want a portable Photoshop computer but don't want to spend this much, PM me.)

Need a lot of screen space, too? Otherwise see the post above yours. Unless you prefer to save money and get something much heavier and less powerful.

This computer is old, but it is cheap, thin and light and built like a tank. The 8665U processor is roughly equivalent to an 11th gen i3, which is plenty fast for office work but not for anything more intense. The battery life should be okay but certainly not as good as they claim.

My .02,
It isn't the newest, it has an 11th generation processor, while the 13th generation is starting to roll out, and it is on windows 10 (most probably upgradeable to 11).
That being said, it is pretty decent value for the money, although my guess is that we will see more at this price point as 13th gen processors continue to roll out
