A great post by caliheat:
I believe that there are many factors when deciding what laptop to purchase.
1) What is your intended use and necessary features. e.g. light use vs. heavy use & optical drive, computer speed etc.
2) As mentioned several times in this thread, RAM itself is very easy to upgrade after you purchase.
3) Brand - IMHO this is pretty important as well - which do your prefer vs. which brand do people recommend.
4) Price - you should decide a price range that best suits your needs.
5) Operating System - Many people like myself prefer Windows 7 vs. 8.1, so this would be another consideration.
6) Warranty - does it include 1 year or more, cost for extending warranty.
7) Detailed Specs:
  Processor  - model and speed i3, i5, & i7 2.0 Ghz, 3.0 Ghz etc.
RAM - This IMHO should be minimum 8GB, especially if running 8.1, however can be added easily.
Hard Drive - SATA vs. SSD, the latter being much faster. SATA itself offers 5400 RPM vs. 7200 RPM again, the latter being faster.
Screen Size - this is a personal preference as you can always attach a larger screen in an office setting.
Battery & Weight - overall laptop weight preference & battery life.
Graphics - Integrated graphics vs. dedicated graphics, e.g. Intel 4400 vs. Nvidia GTX etc.

In summary, you have to decide what are you priorities, what can be upgraded and what you are flexible on.

Excellent article about the differences between the Intel processor suffixes.

At $729 - you have a good point. But w/ a free Xbox you gotta agree the Sony is a better deal

Should've gotten this yesterday
http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-ProBook-4530s-15-6-Notebook-2-30-GHz-Intel-Core-i3-2350M-4-GB-RAM-500-GB-/350586085073?afepn=5335869999&campid=5335869999&PID=1225267#ht_6773wt_1163

I wouldnt get that acer for $399 Its the old i3. I would reccomend this
http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/483442/Lenovo-G570-COREI3-Laptop-Computer-With/?cm_mmc=Affiliates-_-isIkAyUyNbM-_-10-_-27778_1
How about this one http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11767151&search=EndofSummer080612&Sp=S&Mo=65&cm_re=1_en-_-Top_Left_Nav-_-Top_search&lang=en-US&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1&N=5000043&whse=BC&Dx=mode+matchallpartial&Ntk=Text_Search&Dr=P_CatalogName:BC&Ne=4000000&D=EndofSummer080612&Ntt=EndofSummer080612&cm_mmc=BCEmail_Postcard-_-EndofSummer-_-1-_-MarketingItemName&ec=1&No=33&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Nty=1&topnav=&s=1 ? I like getting from costco because they give a 2 year warranty plus a 3rd from amex. Is this comparable to the one u posted?

I don't know anything about computers/laptops so I don't know if this is a good deal. Amazon.com is offering a free $100 amazon GC with a purchase on select ultrabooks.

I wouldn't sacrifice the main product for the filler :)

When said filler can easily be resold for $100, you should really be considering it a discount (or at least a rebate).

My point was get a better pc + filler, don't get something mediocre + filler - The main part of the purchase is still the laptop not the rebate/ discount

The point AsherO was saying is  - dont call the filler - something that is being purchase, rather its a rebate.

So now, you are looking at a Sony laptop costing $600

If anyone here is familiar with laptop pricing; I get emails with special Dell pricing not available for the general public only through those links. If anyone wants to have a look and see of there's any good deals please PM me with your email address.
