A great post by caliheat:
I believe that there are many factors when deciding what laptop to purchase.
1) What is your intended use and necessary features. e.g. light use vs. heavy use & optical drive, computer speed etc.
2) As mentioned several times in this thread, RAM itself is very easy to upgrade after you purchase.
3) Brand - IMHO this is pretty important as well - which do your prefer vs. which brand do people recommend.
4) Price - you should decide a price range that best suits your needs.
5) Operating System - Many people like myself prefer Windows 7 vs. 8.1, so this would be another consideration.
6) Warranty - does it include 1 year or more, cost for extending warranty.
7) Detailed Specs:
  Processor  - model and speed i3, i5, & i7 2.0 Ghz, 3.0 Ghz etc.
RAM - This IMHO should be minimum 8GB, especially if running 8.1, however can be added easily.
Hard Drive - SATA vs. SSD, the latter being much faster. SATA itself offers 5400 RPM vs. 7200 RPM again, the latter being faster.
Screen Size - this is a personal preference as you can always attach a larger screen in an office setting.
Battery & Weight - overall laptop weight preference & battery life.
Graphics - Integrated graphics vs. dedicated graphics, e.g. Intel 4400 vs. Nvidia GTX etc.

In summary, you have to decide what are you priorities, what can be upgraded and what you are flexible on.

Excellent article about the differences between the Intel processor suffixes.

Aspire 5 15.6" i5 13th gen, 16GB RAM (non-upgradeable), 512GB SSD, $450 at Newegg. Very good price for a metal build when there's no Ideapad 5i on sale at B&H.
Do NOT spend $100 more for the i7 version, as you would either 1) be wasting your money or 2) need more than the i7 can give you and can do better.

How bright is the screen?

Don't know for sure.
Acer vs ASUS
Actual processor versus fake processor
All-metal versus partially metal
Unknown screen versus unknown screen (similar model says 300nits)

Facts are that the Acer is a step-up model and the ASUS is a base model (albeit one of the best base models). If I was betting, I would assume the Aspire has a better screen.

If it is an OLED screen that maxes at 300nits and is glossy, it is as good as useless. But I couldn't find this information.

Dell Precision 7670 16" at Woot for $930. Overpowered for light gamers (graphic pros probably won't like the screen) but heavy gamers will have problems with Nvidia Studio drivers. Also good for hardware crunchers (programmers, data science and the like). Metal build.
i5-12600HX (4P+8E 55W), RTX A2000 (8GB VRAM), 32GB RAM and 512GB SSD (so upgrade it if necessary).

Woot, Gram 17 with unknown i5 (but based on LPDDR5 RAM, at least 12th gen), 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD for $900. Officially has 3yr warranty (another indicator that it is not 11th gen - as those only came with 1 yr).
This is the lightest 17" laptop in existence (lighter than many 15" laptops) and has excellent (13th gen) / very good (12th gen) battery life.

The new Grams have a 3 year manufacturer warranty? That's impressive.

All of the 17" since the 12th gen? I'm not seeing that e.g. here: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1759290-REG/lg_17z90r_n_apc5u1_17_gram_laptop_i5_1340p.html
Was true when I checked at LG. I didn't look elsewhere, and just assumed I had overlooked it... Could still be wrong because I only did quick research, but definitely saw 3yr warranties at LG's store (or maybe LG's listed specs), but only for 12th gen+.

Speaking of LG: Gram SuperSlim 15.6" OLED with CU5 125H (28W), 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD, on sale for $800 at LG. Note: 1 yr warranty. Also note: only 3xUSB C, no As.

Envy 16, i7-13700H (45W) and RTX 4060, 16GB RAM and TB SSD, touch $900. Recommended for graphics pros but if you need to push the processor, this one suffers from less thermal headroom for the sake of its portability. Gamers can also probably do better (and maybe should).

TUF A16 with Ryzen 7 7735HS (35W Zen 3+), Radeon 7700S (nearly 4070 level for professionals, 4060 level for gamers barring ray tracing) for an excellent $680 at BB. 16GB RAM is upgradeable. I've used this computer briefly. Although it is heavy, it has surprisingly good battery life.

@Luvtotravel you would do nicely with this if you can handle the weight. Not saying you can't do better, though.

If your only barometer is 512gb of storage you can get a SD card, USB, or SSD with that storage for ~$28.
For a laptop you should be looking at processor, ram, build quality, and portability before you look at storage. It is almost always upgradable. Even if it isn't, if the price is right you can just use external storage options.
