A great post by caliheat:
I believe that there are many factors when deciding what laptop to purchase.
1) What is your intended use and necessary features. e.g. light use vs. heavy use & optical drive, computer speed etc.
2) As mentioned several times in this thread, RAM itself is very easy to upgrade after you purchase.
3) Brand - IMHO this is pretty important as well - which do your prefer vs. which brand do people recommend.
4) Price - you should decide a price range that best suits your needs.
5) Operating System - Many people like myself prefer Windows 7 vs. 8.1, so this would be another consideration.
6) Warranty - does it include 1 year or more, cost for extending warranty.
7) Detailed Specs:
  Processor  - model and speed i3, i5, & i7 2.0 Ghz, 3.0 Ghz etc.
RAM - This IMHO should be minimum 8GB, especially if running 8.1, however can be added easily.
Hard Drive - SATA vs. SSD, the latter being much faster. SATA itself offers 5400 RPM vs. 7200 RPM again, the latter being faster.
Screen Size - this is a personal preference as you can always attach a larger screen in an office setting.
Battery & Weight - overall laptop weight preference & battery life.
Graphics - Integrated graphics vs. dedicated graphics, e.g. Intel 4400 vs. Nvidia GTX etc.

In summary, you have to decide what are you priorities, what can be upgraded and what you are flexible on.

Excellent article about the differences between the Intel processor suffixes.

What’s best deal for laptop 512gb storage under 400$ ?

https://www.newegg.com/steel-gray-acer-aspire-5-a515-58m-54lg-home-personal/p/N82E16834360278 $450, and if you can figure out zip installment payments (read the fine prints carefully) you can get it under $400 before tax

Ive never bought a laptop on doordash but see if this comes up for you for $400 plus tax
https://www.doordash.com/en-CA/browse/merchants/11540306/products/24595128

https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-computer-laptops/inspiron-15-laptop/spd/inspiron-15-3520-laptop/nn3520gsbbs 12thgen non touch plastic dell for $429 (not really worth it compared to the next few)

$449 for touchscreen 13th gen (im pro spending the extra $20)
https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-computer-laptops/new-inspiron-15-laptop/spd/inspiron-15-3530-laptop/useichbtp3530gctz

If 8gb ram and 256gb ssd is ok (you haven't said anything besides 512gb ssd, or why you want davleh that), these past DDMS posts for i3 and i5 12th gen are great

$192 with $100 coupon
No
a) don't get a celeron windows computer.
b) the "Lightning deal" is only $8 less than regular price. 3rd party seller has 100% approval over last 12 months, but 1) only 71 reviews and 2) many negative reviews removed with the "this was amazon fulfilment's fault" scam.
I'm wary of 3rd party amaozn sellers, triple wary when they have 30% off coupon, few reviews, use the fulfillment trick. Cant say its for sure bad, but i wouldn't go there

ETA: I don't know why I read it as an HP computer. I realie now it's a random off brand. Just never go there. done

Roundup of AUTOCAD and REVIT school laptops - @Luvtotravel
$650 - 15.6" budget option, MSI Bravo 15.6" with 45W Ryzen 7 7840HS (Zen 4), Radeon 6650M (4GB VRAM), 16GB upgradeable RAM, 512GB SSD. https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16834156616?Item=N82E16834156616&SoldByNewegg=1

$679 - 14" portable budget option, Vivobook 14X with i7-13700H (45W), RTX 2050 (4GB VRAM), 16GB RAM (upgradeable only to 40GB), TB SSD. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1822163-REG/asus_k3405vf_es74_14_wuxga_16_10_vivobook.html/specs

$794 - 15.6" somewhat portable XPS 15 Open Box at Best Buy, i7-13700H, RTX 4050 (6GB VRAM), 16GB RAM and TB SSD. https://www.bestbuy.com/product/dell-xps-15-15-6-fhd-laptop-intel-core-i7-intel-evo-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-rtx-4050-1tb-ssd-platinum-silver/6540610/openbox?condition=fair

$800 - 15.6" with i9: Vivobook S, i9-13900H and Intel S350 (4GB VRAM), 16GB RAM is not upgradeable, though, TB SSD. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1807565-REG/asus_k5504vn_ds96_15_6_vivobook_s_15.html/specs

$850 - 15.6" with better graphics and decent battery life, also comes in purple/black/white, but heavy. Dell G15, Ryzen 7 7840HS (35W Zen 4), RTX 4060 (8GB), 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD. https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-computer-laptops/g15-gaming-laptop/spd/g-series-15-5535-laptop/useghbts5535grpw?ref=variantstack

$900 - lighter 16" mentioned upthread, best balance of everything here IMHO. HP Envy 16, i7-13700H (45W) and RTX 4060, 16GB RAM and TB SSD. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-envy-16-wide-ultra-xga-touch-screen-laptop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-rtx-4060-1tb-ssd-natural-silver/6572058.p?skuId=6572058

$1000 - maxed out Dell G16, excellent value but you lost the battery life of the $850 version (and no purple option!) without losing weight. i9-13900HX (55W, one of the most powerful processors in a laptop today), RXT 4060 (8GB), 16GB RAM, TB SSD. https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-computer-laptops/g16-gaming-laptop/spd/g-series-16-7630-laptop/useghbts7630hbhz?ref=variantstack

Random good prices at Woot of all places... They apparently don't have the full warranty even though they are new.

Aspire 5 15.6", i5 13th gen U, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, $430
https://computers.woot.com/offers/acer-aspire-5-15-slim-laptop?ref=w_cnt_wp_0_4

Lenovo V14 G4 (cheap business laptop), Ryzen 5 5500U, 8GB upgradeable RAM, 256GB SSD, $330. Has a rare 2.5" slot in addition to the M2 it comes with, so compatible with the cheaper 2.5" SSDs (DON'T get hard drives, 7mm limits you to 4TB anyways).

That post has nothing to do with you. Pick from the post I tagged you on. Any of those are good. The Envy is still the best balance of performance and portability.

I'm in need of a laptop and I know very little about this space :(.
Let me know if you have any recommendations!
I'll take a crack at filling out the template:

Usage: microsoft office (really just excel), youtube, desktop whatsapp, streaming videos like mlb tv, social media, google suite, web browsing, dans deals of course. I'd really like to be able to a few things at once and for it to feel fast and strong as I multitask. I don't think I need much storage. I'd like to stick with windows 11 just b/c thats what im used to
Size: Not picky. whatever is standard I guess
Build quality: Not really sure pros/cons of plastic/metal I'll defer to the experts here
Shop: Ship to NJ within a week or so, i could also pick up from a major retailer like best buy or walmart
Budget: Would like to keep under $500, the cheaper the better of course
Other: I need the finger pad and not the tiny ball or an external mouse. I don't care for touch screen. Battery life isn't that critical b/c it'll be plugged in most of the time.

Basically this:
Aspire 5 15.6" i5 13th gen, 16GB RAM (non-upgradeable), 512GB SSD, $450 at Newegg. Very good price for a metal build when there's no Ideapad 5i on sale at B&H.
Do NOT spend $100 more for the i7 version, as you would either 1) be wasting your money or 2) need more than the i7 can give you and can do better.
https://www.newegg.com/steel-gray-acer-aspire-5-a515-58m-54lg-home-personal/p/N82E16834360278
Haskama here:
https://www.newegg.com/steel-gray-acer-aspire-5-a515-58m-54lg-home-personal/p/N82E16834360278 $450, and if you can figure out zip installment payments (read the fine prints carefully) you can get it under $400 before tax
More detail: You stand to save about $100 or so off of this price. For that, you get a reduction in processing (though still adequate), a reduction in build quality, and less RAM that you will almost definitely need to upgrade sometime during the life of the computer (if they are even upgradeable). Probably but not necessarily a lower resolution / less bright screen.

An example of such an adequate option is for $330, pickup in Micro Center, but has all of the above issues except the RAM. My opinion is to spend the extra money, but here it is:

Basically this: Haskama here:More detail: You stand to save about $100 or so off of this price.

Thank you so much. $450 is perf, I'll spend the money for the extra processing. Appreciate it!

Consider this for $600
16inch, some people love some people hate. Good build. Can check it out in store.
He did say $500 was his budget.
I briefly considered posting this Yoga on the thread when I first saw it, but I think the 155U is a scam. It feels like too little performance for $600. If you must get a 2-in-1, though, this is a good price.

What does @mevinyavin say about the 2 in 1s? ;)
If you MUST get a 2-in-1. But you shouldn't if you don't need to.

I think the 155U is a scam.
Explain
The little research I did shows it to be basically equivalent to the 120u, not justifying the 7 moniker. But at the right price, it can't be worse than a TN screen. ;D

1335U=125U
1355=155U
IN INTEGRATED GRAPHICS

In performance, all of those are just about the same. Have no problem with them selling it, but they should have called them Cores and not Core Ultras.

Because for a Yoga 7 it is a good price with a 1335U also.
