A great post by caliheat:
I believe that there are many factors when deciding what laptop to purchase.
1) What is your intended use and necessary features. e.g. light use vs. heavy use & optical drive, computer speed etc.
2) As mentioned several times in this thread, RAM itself is very easy to upgrade after you purchase.
3) Brand - IMHO this is pretty important as well - which do your prefer vs. which brand do people recommend.
4) Price - you should decide a price range that best suits your needs.
5) Operating System - Many people like myself prefer Windows 7 vs. 8.1, so this would be another consideration.
6) Warranty - does it include 1 year or more, cost for extending warranty.
7) Detailed Specs:
  Processor  - model and speed i3, i5, & i7 2.0 Ghz, 3.0 Ghz etc.
RAM - This IMHO should be minimum 8GB, especially if running 8.1, however can be added easily.
Hard Drive - SATA vs. SSD, the latter being much faster. SATA itself offers 5400 RPM vs. 7200 RPM again, the latter being faster.
Screen Size - this is a personal preference as you can always attach a larger screen in an office setting.
Battery & Weight - overall laptop weight preference & battery life.
Graphics - Integrated graphics vs. dedicated graphics, e.g. Intel 4400 vs. Nvidia GTX etc.

In summary, you have to decide what are you priorities, what can be upgraded and what you are flexible on.

Excellent article about the differences between the Intel processor suffixes.

I bought the Dell Inspiron 15z with $150 eGC 2 weeks ago. Yesterday and today I received 2 different emails that have the GC number and PIN. The weird thing is they are 2 different $150 GCs with different numbers and PIN's. Did they send it by mistake? Should I use it or call them to fix the problem?

First of all there's a thread dedicated to laptops.

Second- what type of question is that? What do you need it for?
It's like asking what's the best car for under $40k? Well it depends what your looking for.... :)
It's not about the quantity of your posts.  It's about the quality.

cowboom.com offers new used and refurbished tech and accesories for very good prices. i bought a samsung laptop with great specs used from them for dirt cheap and it came with a broken usb. due to the insurance i bought i had to wait 30 days for it to kick in and the insurance wouldnt cover it, so cowboom allowed me to return it after their 30 return policy.

i then bought this: Dell I14Z-4303BK 14in Laptop i5 2.5GHz 8GB 750GB DVDRW. i love it. it is used but i made sure to get one with at least a 7 out of 10 rating. it still has 8 months on the warranty from dell. i paid 400 bucks for it!!!

i know others that bought things from them and even though the first product wasnt always good (i.e. bad esn on cell) the customer service was awesome and never had issues dealing with them.

a best buy company whatever that means

My wife needs a laptop for work (mostly spreadsheets and an online payroll system) and browsing... Need to have a windows operating system... Would a tablet (windows/microsoft tablet) be a good solution, besides for the extra $ involved, or is she better off with a $600 laptop (like one of the ones on sale at costco this month)?
Thanks in advance!!!

Some tablets won't work on Windows tablets because they only run Windows RT which isn't a full version of windows, you have to confirm with the company if RT is enough

ipad??? or another tablet can do but the real issue is true multitasking. nothing does it better that a laptop. so if you want the microsoft tablet make sure the multitasking is as good as a pc

I would not recommend. There is no replacement for a laptop yet.  Ultrabooks are now pretty affordable.

I dont really see the point of a tablet when you want to really be using a laptop.

You could look into the Lenovo Yoga, that is laptop, that could be used as a tablet. A little pricey if you get one with an intel processor.

HP and Asus both have tablets with a Dock, that run windows (I think RT version) I wouldnt go for an RT version of windows if you really want the full windows use.

even though im new and i previously wrote something else, I second this.

not that you need my confirmation, but without a whole debate the biggest issue is true multitasking (multiple programs and compatiblities) so yes you are right nothing will beat a pc.

You look at that as a downside?

Its a pretty thin laptop - no room for an optical drive.

Btw - this laptop has a 24GB SSD, It is easily changeable to a bigger one

If I'm not mistaken the ssd drive isn't the standard sata connection - so keep that in mind if you're ordering a larger one.
