Still carrying around a plastic clickwheel iPod nano? Perhaps you've got one buried in a desk drawer? Apple says it could pose a fire hazard, and the company wants to replace it for you, free of charge. Two years after recalling the portable media players in Korea, and three years after announcing a policy to replace visibly overheating ones, Apple's proactively reaching out to any remaining 1st generation iPod nano owners purchased between September 2005 and December 2006. As always, the company claims the overheating issues can be traced to a single battery supplier and very few devices were ever likely to overheat at all, but apparently "the likelihood increases as the battery ages" and Apple wants to nip it in the bud now. You'll find the "iPod nano (1st generation) Replacement Program" at our source link. Have your serial number handy to see if you're eligible.

so... replacement with the same model 6 weeks later. and you need the serial to verify if it's a bad one. i don't see the arb. opp. here. lots of time for a $10 ebay purchase...

i did the replacement program they told me that they r shipping me a box to put the nano in and once i ship it to them they will send me out a replacement the question is what kind of a replacement?

I would have to guess a current nano, but we'll find out soon enough I guess.

Is this replacement program for all gen. 1 nanos or a subset of them?

Gah, I lost my 1st gen nano

I put in the serial and it's asking for my address, do you think I can send them any first-gen nano and get a new one?

"The unit that replaces your current nano will be a 1st gen model as well, according to statements made by an Apple spokesperson to Mashable. But having them replaced is a good idea even if you no longer use your nano and it’s just lying in a closet somewhere, since at the very least, you’ll get a fresh battery that should mean you’ll have another usable iPod sitting around as back-up for at least five years hence."

Surprised they still have those

I had a few 60gb 5th gen replaced - and they gave me the 120gb instead - Prob cuz they were out of the 60gb

Received the box on 12/6 and sent it straight back with the ipod inside.
It was delivered in 1-2 days to Apple.

Per the Apple Repair Website the status is still "Empty box shipped "
