There are a whole bunch of things spreading around this past month and it is no fun.

Flu seems intense this year. Bronchitis right and left. Friend's seven year old daughter was in the hospital for two weeks. Different (adult) friend was in bed for 1.5 weeks.

Yup. I had flu a few weeks ago and it felt more intense/longer than prior bouts of flu.

Just my personal anecdote - everyone in my house got the flu shot.
Everyone (6 family members) caught the flu, with very minor symptoms except for 1 daughter who had aches and fever for 36 hours, and a son who was feeling unwell for 24 hours.

I'll say the shot helped for minimizing the symptoms - based on what I've heard about how a lot of people were out of commission for a week.

There is a new strain of Covid that's spreading in our communities that comes with VERY INTENSE throat pain. It is unbearable.

I had this. Here was the timeline:

-Lost my voice for a couple days (kept up my daily schedule as I assumed I had simply strained my voice)

-Throat started hurting, worse than strep (so stayed home, tested negative for strep, it went away after a few days so returned to life, didn’t suspect COVID and neither did the doc although they said it’s probably a virus)

- Several people who sit near me came down with intense throat pains, all negative for strep. They way they described it sounded far worse than mine. One checked for COVID and tested positive

-Two weeks later I started having mild to moderate chest pain, got it checked out (including a stint at the ER) and it appears I developed a form of post-COVID GERD (hope it doesn’t last too long)

How can you know it was a false positive? Are you talking about PCR tests? False positives are extremely rare.

Both PCR tests? You’re almost certainly positive.

Depending on the day of testing PCR test can have a 60%+ false negative rate, while a false positive rate at any time is .05% or less.

My experience with the off-the-shelf ones were very consistent. We tested the entire family as part of the education requirements (we did three tests every morning for weeks), and we never got confusing results.
Even when the test was almost positive, and a second test the same time was also almost positive, a test six hours later was fully positive. It often takes a day or three to kick in as positive. (The messaging in Israel was consistent about this - and the doctors and Misrad Habriut even agreed!)

There is no almost positive. A faint pink line on a rapid is positive, all the rapids I saw say so.

Almost positive (my own definition) = when the pink line shows up, but twenty minutes after the deadline for considering the results valid.
