It doesn’t help stabilize so that you can get the person off it ?
I don’t know the reason but I believe I saw a graph that showed that the amount of time someone is on a ventilator is almost exactly directly proportional with their chances of survival. As in 1 day, excellent survival rate. 28 days, very low. Etc.
I might be wrong, don’t quote me, just vaguely remember seeing it.
ETA: Not proposing anything myself, but this may have immediate moral implications. At some point into intubation when the patient’s life expectancy dips below a certain survival rate some doctors may decide to electively remove longer-term patients from ventilators (thus “killing” them) to save more lives. I understand this breaches standard medical ethics but it would end up saving many more lives overall and may already be in practice in places like Italy. It’s similar to the age discrimination they are practicing.
