A ventilator / respirator pushes air into the lungs to give the person oxygen.  Sometimes,even with that help, the lungs won't take in enough oxygen. So they try other settings on the ventilator to push the air in differently or other tricks.  Some people's oxygen level doesn't go up and their organs may begin to fail from lack of oxygen.

(One trick you can try at home. Lay on your stomach.  Sometimes the lungs can absorb oxygen better that way.)


In aygarts mothers case, I would guess her breathing muscles were becoming less strong the longer she was ventilated. In the short term, a covid / pneumonia patient is better off on a respirator than struggling for air  and their muscles will have a rest while their body clears the corona virus. The amount of time to clear covid varies.

Heard from a grandchild of a patient, NYU refusing for hours to give Respirator, family (2 of them are Hatzalal) had to fight for it.
luckily they knew whats going on, so they were able to get one.

WHO has been proven to be very unreliable throughout this whole saga. How long did it take them to declare it a pandemic, and that's after they claimed that they don't use the word pandemic anymore? I've also seen a lot of shoddy research from them, but it's hard to completely disregard it when they're the only ones claiming to have researched something.

So S Korea has a relatively homogeneous viral population (the viruses were genetically similar to each other). Apparently (I am not deep on the details here) there is an antibody test that is pretty fast and efficient, but requires a homogenous viral pop /3

The US, however, has seen viral introductions from a couple different places, so our viral population is NOT homogeneous and we would need different antibody tests for the different points of introduction. /4

This is fascinating, it looks like 90% of the COVID transmission in Seattle is from a single introduction in late Jan from China.

So we have to end up using the a RT-PCR test, which was the CDC test. The Seattle lab that we've head so much about modified their own MERS (which is a coronaviral respiratory disease, but not COVID-19) to test for COVID-19.  /5

I've been told the Roche tests are... not better, but apparently there are a lot of testing facilities that can run them, but I'm not sure what the difference is between the Roche test and the RT-PCR test /6
