ETA: that light blue spike at the far right of the graph days we're in serious trouble. Hospitalizations lag behind cases, and cases keep climbing, so that darker blue line will keep going up for a bit.

Ouch so we're at a higher rate than the peak in mid-end April. Not good news. At least the death rate is currently about half of then. Keeping my fingers crossed it goes down not up  :(.

Sorry? What do you mean that death rate is about half?

The death rate is much better because treatment protocols are light years ahead of what they were in the spring. However, when hospitals reach capacity, stupid little things get missed and cause otherwise minor issues to become big issues. Hence the lockdowns.

April 21 = 2744 deaths
Nov 11 = 1480 deaths

Hospitalizations currently slightly higher than peak Hospitalizations mid to end of April.

Yes agree. (Is it time for a cheshbon hanefesh ;)?)

I'm not sure you've crossed the "more often than not" threshold yet. Proceed with caution  8)

Granted but even if the number of cases were similar to now (which there is no way of really knowing) the deaths were still way more then.

Where can we see current hospitalizations rates (not finding accurate numbers via Google for all of USA)? I also don't think its currently close to the rate back then. Perhaps that would be a better comparison.

Deaths are very closely correlated to new cases, except in the beginning when there was little testing. I think this chart shows it very clearly.

The correlation is there from July through October. However, from early October until now the line for cases is a lot steeper than the one for deaths (thankfully).

Here's to hoping the deaths will reverse because we can and will give better treatment than we did months ago.

I envy your optimism. Notice how the deaths always lag. They are lagging here, too. Will they spike as high as the cases at the same rate as before? Hopefully not, but maybe. They definitely will spike, though.

Even with the lag, the rise and fall of both lines from July to October are eerily similar.  Not so much now. We'll have to wait out the next few months to see where that line will go (hopefully down! Yes, I'm staying optimistic :). A lot better than going into depression).

YWN: Six northeast U.S. governors are having an “emergency summit” on COVID-19 this weekend as the virus continues to spread throughout the region, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Friday.

Cuomo said the group will discuss potential coordination of restrictions on restaurants and bars, as well as interstate travel and quarantine rules. Several states have passed new restrictions this week, including New York’s 10 p.m. curfew for bars and restaurants and a ban on gatherings over 10 people in private.

New Jersey is lowering the number of people allowed to gather both indoors and outdoors to fight the surging second wave of COVID-19, Gov. Phil Murphy said Monday morning, after the state set back-to-back record days for new coronavirus cases over the weekend.

Indoor gatherings will be dropped from 25 to 10 people and outdoor gatherings from 500 to 100 people with the winter holidays fast approaching, Murphy said. But he said the change does not affect the current 25% capacity limits on indoor dining in the state.

https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/coronavirus-covid-19-update-fda-authorizes-first-covid-19-test-self-testing-home

From the manufacturer’s site:

Quote
In a Community Testing Study, where the Lucira test was compared to a FDA authorized known high sensitivity SARS-CoV-2 test, Lucira achieved a 94% positive percent agreement (PPA) and a 98% negative percent agreement (NPA). Excluding samples with very low levels of virus that possibly no longer reflected active infection1, Lucira achieved 100% positive percent agreement.

This sounds like good news. Any idea what it cost and how available it’ll be?

Also, does molecular mean it’s compatible to PCR, or not necessarily?
