I recieved unclaimed property notice by mail. Is this true?
« on: January 29, 2020, 12:53:12 PM »
Got a mail from illinois state treasurer's office  about unclaimed property
Says " you received this letter because the office believes that we have property that belongs to you"

It has my name and my previous address . Reported by METABANK for about $800 in 2018.
It has the Property ID#.

I went to the illinois treasurer website and entered my name and the property number.
It does say AMOUNT OF OVER $100 and it asks my my name address and social security number to claim.

It says they will verify and see if it is an unclaimed property that really belongs to me and then go from there.

The website is a legit.
But I have never heard of this.

Anyone think this is  a scam or real?
Thanks

As others have said, as long as it's the official website, you can be sure it's legit. People often don't realize the different ways money can fall through the cracks, especially when buying/selling property.
Memories last forever, make them while you can.

After claiming it online, it sent me an email asking me to  sign and submit the form online or by mail with copy of my SS card and notarized form.

Not so easy to do it online at home.

I work at a bank. Money is escheated to the state generally if an account has been dormant for 2 years (varies by state) and an attempt to reach the customer by mail was unsuccessful.

If it's at all possible that you had money in this account (maybe a security deposit or escrow etc) then yes, it's your money.

Yes. That would be an account in your name, and if for whatever reason it was never given back to you, it is still the renters property.

Recently happened to me with a bank account I never got around to closing (tried once and they wanted more ID and it took a while to get back there), I finally got there and they said the money went to the state (NY). But I have yet to find it on the unclaimed funds website. Been checking once a month or so.

Edit: I still get mail to the address on the account and I don't see that they ever tried to reach me.
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

I have $10 owed to me from Macy's that the government has right now. No patience to get it back.
I'm not who you think I am.
