computer games
« on: January 30, 2020, 06:28:59 PM »
What are good computer games for my kids?  Don't want anything too violent or complicated...
Ages: 10-12 years old  & 6 and down

I used to love Simcity and Age of Empires. Anybody know if the modern versions of these games are easy enough to understand and have not developed into anything too violent or language etc...
Any other ideas?

Simcity!!! Haven't heard that in years! Wow!
If it's not free shipping it's not worth it.

Most computer games these days are built with the aim to be as addictive as possible. Be wary of the big-name games - they are big names because they hook the player.

Roller Coaster Tycoon for the younger ones, it's a similar concept to Sim City. There's also Zoo Tycoon, Mall Tycoon, Lemonade Tycoon but Roller Coaster is the most exciting.

Nancy Drew games are ages 12+, they are really good. Some of them have not tzniyus characters so you'll need to check them first, but you can probably tell from the trailer/cover. Also older ones are probably better than newer ones in that respect

The younger one might like Cluefinders (idk if they are still around)

Your local public library may have games on CD that you can borrow (and hope the CDs aren't scratched)
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

I don't know if it's still around, but "Where in the World/Time/USA is Carmen Sandiago" were good games that taught geography and history.

most don't work with windows 10
Most work if run in compatibility mode, however it is much easier to play the games online https://archive.org/details/softwarelibrary_msdos_games  https://archive.org/details/msdos_Oregon_Trail_The_1990

Humongous Entertainment had a bunch of games that were really great for kids. Spy Fox, Freddie Fish, Pajama Sam, Putt Putt. Each one had multiple games with the same character and were in story mode. Each character was a for a different age group. They were problem solving/critical thinking type games.
Memories last forever, make them while you can.

is there a way to save the games when your playing or must you start over every time?

Humongous Entertainment ... Spy Fox, Freddie Fish, Pajama Sam, Putt Putt ... They were problem solving/critical thinking type games.

The genre those games belong to is "point-and-click adventure," and it's not just for kids, although
it can work well for children's games. The Nancy Drew series (mentioned above) is also in that genre.

Simcity and Age of Empires

A simulation (management) game and a real-time strategy game, respectively.
There are a lot of both kinds out there, and they don't usually age too badly.
Do you want to play a board game, digitally or in Lakewood NJ? PM me. (Can be asynchronous, i.e. take turns whenever)

Many modern board games have PC versions which might fit the bill.
I'd have to do a little research before making specific recommendations.
