Humongous Entertainment had a bunch of games that were really great for kids. Spy Fox, Freddie Fish, Pajama Sam, Putt Putt. Each one had multiple games with the same character and were in story mode. Each character was a for a different age group. They were problem solving/critical thinking type games.
Memories last forever, make them while you can.

Most work if run in compatibility mode, however it is much easier to play the games online https://archive.org/details/softwarelibrary_msdos_games  https://archive.org/details/msdos_Oregon_Trail_The_1990

is there a way to save the games when your playing or must you start over every time?

IIRC yes
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

Humongous Entertainment ... Spy Fox, Freddie Fish, Pajama Sam, Putt Putt ... They were problem solving/critical thinking type games.

The genre those games belong to is "point-and-click adventure," and it's not just for kids, although
it can work well for children's games. The Nancy Drew series (mentioned above) is also in that genre.

Simcity and Age of Empires

A simulation (management) game and a real-time strategy game, respectively.
There are a lot of both kinds out there, and they don't usually age too badly.

Many modern board games have PC versions which might fit the bill.
I'd have to do a little research before making specific recommendations.

It's been a few years but we used to play Hoyle Board Games, Hoyle Card Games, etc. Each CD was a collection of games.

For the price of $0.00, I can heartily recommend Ticket to Ride and Carcassonne (both best-selling, award-winning
family-level modern board games). They're free to download on the Epic Games Store until February 13. (PC-only.)

The person who made it made cheats for everything. Just google it. Or don't and stay happy. High scores meant nothing after that

In no particular order, here are some “kosher” games that I play and allow my children to play.
They are all technically bad for the Jews as they lead to bitul Torah.

    NetHack
    Dwarf Fortress
All the major Mario games, from Super Mario Bros. to Super Mario Odyssey
Portal and Portal 2 (some kol isha at the end)
    Harvest Moon 64
    Lemmings
    Super Hexagon
    Minecraft (offline of course)
    Space Chem
    TIS-100
    Snake
    Overcooked (especially fun with friends)
    Snake Pass
Humongous Entertainment games, especially the Putt Putt, Freddie Fish, and Pajama Sam series
Creeper World 3: Arc Eternal (or just about any tower defense game)
    Hexcells
    Braid
    Crayon Physics Deluxe
    SpaceCom
    Osmos
Any game in the Civilization series
    SimCity
    Cities: Skylines
Anno 1492 AKA Dawn of Discovery
    Ticket to Ride
    Thomas was Alone
    World of Goo
    A Mind Forever Voyaging
