What Will Airlines Do With Their New Excess Capacity?
« on: January 31, 2020, 12:22:58 PM »
With US airlines suspending China operations, will they just ground the extra planes and pilots?
Launch new routes?
Add capacity to existing routes?

Can new routes be launched that quickly? This grounding could potentially be very temporary if a flu vaccine is developed or transmissions slow down.

I don't think anyone is expecting a vaccine or slowdown in next few coming months. Trajectory is looking very bleak indeed.

I'm sure some of it will go to help out where they have irregular operations with planes/staff. Although I'm sure they won't be flying a 777 to cover for an A320 with mechanical issues
They may add extra flights to routes already busting at the seams.
Memories last forever, make them while you can.

This is what I was thinking. But 2 different size planes.
I'm not who you think I am.

Would be cool see a bunch of idle 777/787 frames dumped onto transcon routes. Planes don't like being idle, so I think it's certainly an option.
Would be even cooler to see UA launch ORD-TLV or LAX-TLV :)

Sadly, I'm guessing there will be furloughs until capacity needs change...

Wouldn't it take months to get new slots and market a route? Very few city pairs would be effected by this, and if the suspension would only be about 6 months, not many options. Maybe we'll see expidited retrofitting?

They should wet lease to southwest or norweigen that would kill for capacity due to the max.

Isn't LAX needed to support SFO? If they add LAX will SFO have many empty seats?

Curious if there are more originations in SFO or LAX.

I'd guess that SFO buys J and LAX buys Y, so the route is from SFO.

There's a lot of J in LA...

If there was as much as SFO then they would have their own UA flight.

Has UA cancelled China flights yet? Between. HKG and China, lot of open trans pacific capacity. Lots of people flying to Thailand, Australia et al would connect there.
