I don't believe the requirement is to have a direct deposit, just a deposit. Seems like anything should work.

ACH push from Cap1 worked fine for me last year.

for an ACH push did you go to bank and ask for specifically an ACH transfer or did you do it online as a transfer to an external account(US bank)?

are most external transfers ACH?

Yes. Unless you specifically do it as a wire transfer.

I recently opened Citizens Bank checking and savings for $600 SUB.

Found a code on eBay for bonus with less onerous requirements. Applied online for DW and got declined! 

This morning my son told me that he tried applying for Citizens bank account (he was unaware of more favorable bonus available) and he got declined too.

What's the story? This never happened to me (other than Chase which has me blacklisted).

No compliance questions asked.

It is another CRA (credit reporting agency). Widely used by CU's but some banks do use them. Many get denied for too many accounts opened recently.

Most banks IME but you can open quite a few each year before it becomes an issue, unlikely the issue here if they don’t even know what it is.

If you have had issues with bouncing checks or overdrawn accounts that would be on chexsystems and would likely cause problems with opening an account.

BTW you can get your chexsystems report for free just like your credit report.
